Who'd a thunk. The party of liberty and freedom, the Republicans, have their fingerprints all over the recent judicial decisions backing Gay Rights.
Guess the Dems only talk the talk when they need the votes...

Evan Wolfson emails to note how so many judges who have backed simple civil equality for all citizens have appointed by Republicans:
Massachusetts (Goodridge, 2003) Margaret Marshall, appointed by Chief Justice Gov. Weld (R) in 1996, elevated to Chief by Gov. Cellucci (R);
in 1999 California (In re Marriage Cases, 2008) Ronald George, Chief Justice appointed by Gov. Wilson (R) in 1991, elevated to Chief by Gov. Wilson (R);
in 1996 Connecticut (Kerrigan, 2008) Richard Palmer, Associate Justice appointed by Gov. Weicker (Ind.); in 1993 -- Note that Weicker was a Republican during his time in the House and Senate. He won the governorship as an independent.
And today, in Iowa (Varnum, 2009) Mark Cady, Associate Justice, appointed by Gov. Branstad (R) in 1998.

not surprising if true republicans with a message of liberty, limited government, and rights is in office. The problem is you have quasi-socialist republicans or religious zealots who take most of the posts

You hit on a sore point for us GLBT Democrats - true conservative judges (not the Bush appointee types) are more inclined to take the libertarian view on this.
There is a lot of mounting anger in the GLBT community towards the lip service being paid us by the Obama Administration/Pelosi/Reid. As long as the religious right has a grip on the Republican Party, you won't see a migration there, but you will see serious financial and time challenges to the old guard Democratic party in upcoming years, as well as withholding of money/time/votes from the bigots in the Democratic Party

All the more reason for a
true conservative third party that minds it's own business....

it is really interesting in RI because today they had a story with new news with VT and basically the GA wants to have equal but seperate rights. So all the rights, but not the term marriage and it is outraging a lot of the GBLT community. On the other hand the republican governor says that it should not be legislated and it should be brought to a vote and the people decide.
The poll on the projo has 56% in favor, which is good considering about 80% of the people that post and reply to things on the projo are bigots. I think it would pass easily if left to the people of RI. Leave it to the GA and who knows. The worry to much about pandering to the illegal immigrants and not about the rest of the state.

More evidence that if the Republican Party can extract the Fundamentalists from deep within their asses - they can return to being the best party for this country...
until then...
It's Bible thumping Republicans pointing fingers at gays... then getting busted in the mens room...
