Air Force now seeks $420 million for Offutt flood repairs; 60 structures damaged beyond repair

The Air Force now says it needs at least $420 million to clean up Offutt Air Force Base and repair or replace structures damaged in the March floods, a senior Air Force official told The World-Herald Wednesday.
John Henderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and energy, said about 60 structures were damaged beyond repair and must be torn down — including the longtime headquarters of the 55th Wing, the largest military unit on the base. They were damaged by floodwaters that reached as high as 9 feet in some buildings, and by a toxic sludge left behind when they receded.
"It wasn't just the water, it was what was in the water," Henderson said.
The latest cost is higher than the $350 million estimate issued last month by outgoing Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson.

In 10 years when President Ocasio’s blue ribbon panel is calculating the dollar costs of climate change you’ll be fine with all this floodplain and beach construction

Move all these damn government facilities out of tornado/hurricane/flood zone alley. Enough with the Red State entitlements (ass kissing!).

No Kidding, and NY had Hurricane Sandy. Most of the government offices would have to be in the Appalachian or Rocky Mountain area's.

Offutt gets flooded every year? Huh...
New York state gets an average of nine tornadoes a year. The most in a single year since 1990 was 23, in both 1998 and 2011. In each of the past two years, New York has seen just two tornadoes.

What's Offutt? I'm talking about facilities in Red States that experience these weather events EVERY year. Why are you so pro entitlement for Red States Gil?

Just exposing your B as in S as in BS. I support the United States of America, and live in a Red, White and Blue state. If NY or California had this issue, I would be supporting them too. I'm not on your old man hate bandwagon.

Yeah....right Red Man.
Do you know how much Fed BS is located in and around Oklahoma City? Thousands of Fed employees travel there for training every year....including during tornado season. Why do you think that is?

Probably a drop in the federal budget bucket. If you vote for Tulsi, she will get us out of all these ridiculous wars and democracy building activities. Then we will have money to spend on infrastructure and other needs, in all states.

How all that Federal largesse started moving south in the 90s
around the same time there was a plurality of snowbirds living permanently in FL

This thread is about Offutt and DC is built on a swamp and is just as exposed to hurricanes as Offutt is to flooding and it's the ultimate recipient of federal money and jobs. If you are intellectually honest, it should be #1 on your list for relocation even though it's not in a red state.

There are plenty of Blue States - Delaware, Maryland, Va, California, Washington, Hawaii - which reap the benefits of federal money. Jeff's obsession over red v blue is intellectually dishonest. The tit for tat is pointless. I thought we were the UNITED States of America not the States of America.
There's a reason why there's so much in the South ( in terms of federal lands, military sites,etc..) and it has nothing to do with Republicans.
During the many decades in the 20th century when the South was solidly Democratic, its congressional representatives in both the House and the Senate, enjoying great seniority, came to hold leadership positions on powerful committees, which they used to send federal dollars back to their home states in the form of contracts, projects, installations.

mainjeff and "intellectually honest" don't belong in the same sentence.
