Forget the talk radio guys, David Brooks is probably the stupidest pundit on the right after his dumb article about reparations and now this.
Most of human history has been marked by war. Between 1500 and 1945, scarcely a year went by without some great power fighting another great power. Then, in 1945 that stopped. The number of battlefield deaths has plummeted to the lowest levels in history. The world has experienced the greatest reduction in poverty in history, as well as the greatest spread of democracy and freedom.

Why did this happen? Mostly it was because the United States decided to lead a community of nations to create a democratic world order. That order consisted of institutions like NATO, the U.N. and the World Bank. But it was also enforced by the pervasive presence of American power — military, economic and cultural power as well as the magnetic power of the democratic idea, which inspired dissidents worldwide.
So the United Nations that can't do anything about genocide in Rwanda or Darfur or stop Bashir Assad from using chemical weapons is what maintains peace in the world?

Meanwhile, our "international order" demonizes liberal Israel and makes excuses for Arab strongmen and puts Libya and Saudi Arabia on the human rights council cuz duh-versity. :dunce:

The relative world peace after WWII exists because of nuclear weapons and an increasing interdependence on the major world economies, not because of internationalism.

Well, one could argue that "an increasing interdependence on the major world economies" is intertwined with internationalism, at least to a point. Good point about the nuclear weapons - without them, we likely would've had an out and out war, or multiple wars, with the USSR. But you gloss over the American power part - it isn't the UN that did a lot, it was the American power that was behind it that did a lot of what it did. Without that power it's just another League of Nations.

Bullsh1t - that article is pure bullsh1t

Something else happened in 1945 - something that is the DIRECT cause of the decline in war deaths. It is also the same thing that kept us out of a war with the Soviet Union

hint for the author: it wasnt the new global kum ba yah order erected by the US

I swear these idiot scribblers and their idiot social theories... it isnt that goddamn complicated- human mass behavior - its easy, really. People like Brooks like to hear themselves talk and so they invent whole new subject of bullsh1t

It’s the power of the atom. That alone is responsible for the decline in war deaths. Argue otherwise and be an idiot

The only way to prevent war is to ensure there are no winners.

Nukes do that.

Plus, the Chinese (for example) are more valuable to us alive than dead, as we are to them as well.

David Brooks has never really been on the right. He’s one of those “conservatives” who desperately wants to be invited to liberal “salons” and cocktail parties. He has been called the “Times token.”

Its such a conundrum - The solution to the population problem is responsible for the population problem

How, pray tell, has Mr. Flat-Earth pissed off liberals? Are you Butt-hurt by something he said?

Believe it or not but there was a time before Trump where some liberals had issues with globalism, free trade, and the democracy/sovereignty crushing power of multinational corporations.

(And mustachioed elitists sipping tea in Davos)

When I read The Earth is Flat years ago, my take was that Friedman thought we should accommodate the global economy, not surrender to it. But I guess that’s heresy in today’s progtard circles. :coffee:

I don't always agree with him but I like Tommy. He makes me think about things from a different perspective and opens my mind up to other possibilities.
