Border Controversy

Post by SuperHornet »

I've just seen a report that AOC and those like her are making up some monumental cr@p over the situation at the border. Just a day or so after she supposedly "toured" a facility, a group of Hispanic-Americans toured the same facility, heard that the leftists didn't even bother to go through but relied on hearsay to score phony political points, and in general, they found the facility to be OK.

What gives here?

AOC and other lawmakers did not "supposedly" tour the facility. They toured the facility.

Either AOC and the Hispanic Caucus members are lying, or the Hispanic pastors are lying, because the 2 groups have described 2 totally different realities.

I would characterize her twitter stuff as embellishing the truth rather than making stuff up. (She's a congresscritter, that's what they do.)

There was at least one CBP agent there who was an asshole. The stuff about drinking from toilets was third hand, they did not witness it or witness the agent telling them to do it.

Adding to AOC's issues was the revelation of a Facebook page of current and former CBP officers which had some very inappropriate memes and posts by CBP officers about her and other congresspeople. I suspect there are going to be some CBP types looking for new employment soon - as they should be.

DoD and DoS (among other agencies) have always put the screws to that kind of stuff and DHS should be held to the same standard.

As with this story, the truth lies somewhere in between the two.

Haven't these folks been pouring into this country by the thousands for four decades now..?
A crisis implies a significant new change right..?

what's the "new" part of this "crisis" ?

Between 1990 and 2000, the number of children ages 17 and under with immigrant parents grew 60 percent, from 8.2 million to 13.1 million. Between 2000 and 2017, the number grew by another 39 percent, from 13.1 million to 18.2 million.

The population of first-generation immigrant children grew by 43 percent between 1990 and 2000 (from 1.9 million to 2.7 million), but then declined 19 percent between 2000 and 2017 (from 2.7 million to 2.2 million).

Totally a valid point 89hen...
which I think is why we've also got a 50% take up rate on "Border Crisis" vs. this is old news and who cares

We just happen to have a president that feels very strongly about the ongoing immigration trend
and not so strongly about the Chinese Hoax

The crisis (which everyone now acknowledges) is that the last three months have seen record monthly numbers of border crossings and apprehensions - it is literally a tsunami of people. DHS has roughly the same personnel and facilities that they had under the previous admin but now they are completely overwhelmed and cannot keep up.

Procedures are pretty much the same, apprehension processing pretty much the same... what has changed is the numbers and it IS a crisis right now - both because of the record high numbers and that the birder infrastructure cannot keep up and neither can the courts. Our asylum system is broken and being openly gamed.

And juxtaposed with all of that we have calls in Congress for dismantling the entire enforcement infrastructure. Literally the opposite of “let’s build a wall”.

In a few months go pull up your graphs again when the data actually comes in

You may think it is no big deal because it doesn’t affect you right now

My understanding is that it is not record numbers. It is still a lower rate than it was in the early 2000s. My understanding is that it is an upsurge as compared to recent years and also different in nature in that it is families asking for asylum instead of Mexicans jumping the border to look for jobs.

Below is a graph of apprehensions by year. I'm guessing 2019 will be higher than 2018 but will not approach 2000. Also, while the graph below is annual rather than monthly, I'm guessing there were months during 2000 that had higher numbers of apprehensions than any month during 2019.

And BTW I think the main reason for the congestion is a change in practice. I think that in previous years most of the immigrants we see being held in these centers now would've been released. I think Trump changed things so that they are trying to detain and hold a lot of them and that's what's causing the congestion.

See the article at https://www.texastribune.org/2018/11/01 ... mmigrants/.

Here's what I think is a good analysis of the apprehensions trend:

https://bipartisanpolicy.org/blog/new-b ... ed-levels/

Only thing is the article says that the 132,887 apprehended in May, 2019, was the highest number since 140,062 were apprehended in April 2005 but they show a chart (Figure 1) indicating that more than 150,000 were apprehended during some month between October, 2005 and June, 2006.

Anyway the basic point is that there's been an upsurge. It hasn't reached to rate of the early 2000s yet but it might be getting there.
