MGGA: Trump has asked aides about possibility of US acquiring Greenland: report

President Trump has privately asked aides about the possibility of purchasing Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Two advisers told the Journal that Trump asked them and other advisers at dinners and in passing conversations whether such a move would be possible, listening intently when they talked about its resources and geopolitical importance.

He also reportedly asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.

Hell, Peter Minuit bought Manhattan Island from the Indians for about 24 bucks worth of tchotchkes. Now it’s worth billions.

We should be able to shmooze the Danes for Greenland. No problem.

I'm not against the thought, but I'd want the people of Greenland to be for it. At a fair price, more land and natural resources for any country is never a bad thing

I think we should focus on Puerto Rican statehood first though.

Allahpundit has been on a roll lately:

The China angle is true - they’ll have a base there eventually. Of course it will be for “research” purposes

Denmark ain't about to sell Greenland.

Would have been a smart move 75+ years ago, though.

Apparently we've tried to buy Greenland going as far back as Andrew Johnson's Presidency in 1867 (we tried getting Iceland back then too). Truman tried buying it in the 1940's for $100M, to no avail.

This is where the resistance to anything Trump is silly - just because Trump is a buffoon and for it doesn't mean we should be reflexively against it (same thing happened with the Space Force thing - it is a good idea to be the strongest militarily in space relative to anyone else, even if Trump says he's for it too). Being a buffoon, he's likely to stumble onto a good thing every now and then just by definition, so we should be okay with going along with the good ideas while filtering out the insane ones. We should buy Greenland. Let's git 'er done.

I agree that we should if the opportunity is there. I really doubt Denmark is trying to offload it, though. This isn't happening and it's just a distraction from his other clusterfucks

That's the OTHER standard response...."this is just a distraction from his other clusterfucks"....according to lefties he's a retard, but also and at the same time apparently crazy like a fox and able to coordinate and manipulate people/media/supporters like the fucking devil.

That's our problem, the inability to pay attention to more than one thing. There should be no problem criticizing Trump where appropriate, while also working ahead on things that could be positive, even if it's something that he precipitates. We're a very laser focused society as of late, and that's not a particularly good thing.

And yes, Denmark probably isn't selling - they've been rebuffing our attempts for a good 160 years so far. But you never know, the Greenlanders may not be all that fond of Denmark...
But while Greenland might be rich in minerals, it currently relies on Denmark for two thirds of its budget revenue. It has high rates of suicide, alcoholism and unemployment.

Of course they're not that fond of Denmark. What island thousands of miles away from their overlords would be? But, you think they're chomping at the bit to become a territory of the US?

If Denmark does want to sell (no indication they do), Canada would be far more likely.

I haven’t read why a trump wants to buy Greenland. So I’ll withhold judgement. On the face - why would we?

Nobody is buying or selling Greenland...
and the fact that this is somehow a "serious conversation" because 80 years ago Nations were still shuffling pieces around on the board pre-WWII is irrelevant...

Jeezus Titty Fucking Christ

Each U.S. Tax payer is $220,000. in debt
We could not muster the $50 trillion required to make the purchase

Natural resources and strategics -

We’ve tried buying it twice before, for those same reasons

But Greenland doesn’t want to be bought, so there’s that
