I think the point was that Bolton and other say he resigned whereas Trump says he was fired.

Trump's tweet says he asked for his resignation. Whatever it is that you are trying to say, you need to say it.

Bolton says he wasn't fired. He says he offered his resignation. That's different than Trump asking for his resignation.

Something like this:
Bolton - Mr.President, i'm resigning as NSA.
Trump - You can't resign. You're fired.

Goodie. I hope we can spend the next news week going back and forth on whether Trump really fired him or if he resigned, and what this reveals in terms of Trump's mental makeup. If we can find a way to work a permanent marker into the story line we can reuse a lot of memes and save time.

Five bucks says Bolton protested Trump inviting the Taliban to Camp David a little too forcefully. He would not have been happy about it.
