The Trump Whistleblower Extravaganza Thread

Post by kalm »

Skelly was right. Prolly needs its own thread.

Aside from whether or not a president should be above the law, the people or, in the case of classified information, their representatives have a right to look at the allegations and what Trump said. To block that ability, in and of itself is criminal.

David Frum chimes in with a reference to history....
These treasons would emerge into daylight after the overthrow of Charles’s brother and the Stuart dynasty in 1688. For the men of 1787, these events of the century before their own felt as vivid and central as the civil-rights era of the mid-20th century seems to us nearing the middle of the 21st.

So Gouverneur Morris said, according to notes taken by James Madison:

He was now sensible of the necessity of impeachments, if the Executive was to continue for any time in office. Our Executive was not like a Magistrate having a life interest, much less like one having an hereditary interest in his office. He may be bribed by a greater interest to betray his trust; and no one would say that we ought to expose ourselves to the danger of seeing the first Magistrate in foreign pay without being able to guard agst it by displacing him. One would think the King of England well secured agst bribery. He has as it were a fee simple in the whole Kingdom. Yet Charles II was bribed by Louis XIV. The Executive ought therefore to be impeachable for treachery; Corrupting his electors, and incapacity were other causes of impeachment. For the latter he should be punished not as a man, but as an officer, and punished only by degradation from his office. This Magistrate is not the King but the prime-Minister. The people are the King. When we make him amenable to Justice however we should take care to provide some mode that will not make him dependent on the Legislature.

Foreign corruption inducing treason was the core impeachable offense in the eyes of the authors of the Constitution.

Republicans: Government should be small.

Also Republicans: The President has absolute power.

Reality: The power of people should be so weak it can be trampled upon with little effort.

The timing of this is really suspicious as the Democrats are exploring the possibility of beginning discussions on whether or not to open preliminary impeachment inquiries.

It also happens as Trump has ticked off hawks who want to bomb Iran.

Until some other facts come to light it doesn't register on the give-a-shit-ometer. I remember when Christopher Hitchens was raising concerns about Clinton foundation donors when the Hildabeast became SoS and no one on the left cared. I guess when you do it legally that makes it okay. :coffee:

So, the ICIG appointed by Trump and a lifelong Republican is kicking up a stink to help Democrats in their impeachment effort?

It means Trump gets to say what he wants to foreign leaders, just like Obama got to.

This was in reference to what Obama said when speaking to the Russians. "Tell Vlad I'll have more flexibility after the election".

You didn't raise a stink over that one? Huh. I'm surprised.

I don't understand why Trump would even take this path, if the rumors are true, to try to get some dirt on Biden and his son. It's very clear that the way to do this is not directly, but to have an intermediary do the work, preferably someone, like a former spy say, with a British accent since that makes it sound better. Have him contact the Ukranians or Russians or whomever and just get the information that way. At least that's how it's been done.

Quick death to this one.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national ... story.html
One source familiar with the contents of the exchange said that Trump did not raise the issue of American military and intelligence aid that had been pledged to Ukraine, indicating there was not an explicit quid pro quo in that call.

The problem is that the Republicans in Congress are corrupt. The system is designed so that Congress is ultimately the most powerful branch. But things break down when we have a situation like we have now where Congressmen and Senators in the same Party as the President are willing to look the other way when the Executive Branch breaks the law.

Ideally, everybody in the Legislative Branch would recognize the refusal to follow the law and turn the information over to the intelligence committees as unacceptable and all, including Republicans, would tell the President that either the information is turned over or he's out on his ear. But the Republican Party is totally corrupt right now.

Same with the tax returns thing by the way.

Fine. Then turn the information over as the law requires. If there is nothing there there is nothing there. But provide the information to the intelligence committees.

And BTW there have been an awful lot of "somethings" already. There were lots of "somethings," for example, in the Mueller report. We are just in a situation where people on the conservative/republican side call "something" "nothing" and get away with it because there are enough people in the cult right now to sustain that.

Trying to get dirt on a political opponent is one thing

Trying to influence another country to generate dirt on that opponent is definitely impeachable

Impeachment is a political exercise - so if enough evidence that Trump told the Ukrainian prez to reopen the Biden investigation arises... to convince enough of Congress to vote for impeachment, then he’ll be impeached, and rightly so

And there’s a possibility it could take Biden down as well - because if he did use his influence as VP to shut down the investigation it will come to light. Warren, Bernie and others will seize on it

That's a ridiculous statement. The IG has clearly indicated there is something. Maybe once the something is turned over people can debate its significance. But there is something to turn over and the Administration is clearly violating the statute in refusing to turn it over.

If a Democrat Administration was doing this Republicans would be apoplectic. Republicans...or at least the overwhelming majority of Republicans both in elected office and in the electorate...are demonstrating every day that they have ZERO integrity. There is no justification for supporting this sort of thing.

That's interesting. I'd say Hume was attempting to attack the credibility of the report. The problem with that is that the relevant statute says that we only get to this point if there is a report of a matter of urgent concern and the Inspector General determines that the report is credible. And we are in a situation where the Inspector General determined that a report on a matter of urgent concern is credible. So Hume's effort is a "fail" in the eyes of any reasonable person. Now we have the acting Director of National Intelligence clearly violating the statute by refusing to forward the matter to Congress.

None of that is debatable. The fact that we have a large percentage of the population thinking that is OK because the Executive Branch is controlled by in THEIR Party is a serious problem for our country.
