It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Overpopulation, which is basically a contributor to most everything else on the list

Re: What is the greatest threat to the future of humanity?
Are we talking an extinction event or a threat to structured societies?
If it's an extinction event, I think there's only four realistic scenarios with the most being nuclear warfare and the accompanying fallout. The others (IMO) are:
-Unconstrained malicious technology (AI, gray goo, etc.)
-Large enough meteor to destroy Earth/atmosphere.
-Runaway greenhouse effect (this would take centuries).
Any other scenario - while threatening - can be adapted to, is self-correcting, or is solvable with technology.

Yellowstone megaeruption.

Nuclear war would be devastating, but I dont’ think it would wipe out ALL of humanity. Nor would overpopulation or any of the other issues noted.

And recent discoveries of new large impact craters and Lidar showing civilizations in Central and South America far larger and probably more advanced than originally thought, suggest previous cataclysmic events with greater frequency and devastation that took mankind to the brink.

I went with the overpopulation - I'm assuming that we, as we've done before, can adapt and innovate and figure ways to overcome it, but it's still a hill to get over. 9-15 billion people by 2100 is a lot of people.

The answer is the Return of bandl.
Re: What is the greatest threat to the future of humanity?
The "war" itself wouldn't, but a global nuclear fallout would kill off humanity in the ensuing decades.AZGrizFan wrote:Yellowstone megaeruption.

The atmosphere is contaminated, the water is contaminated, and food sources are contaminated. A spike in cancers, malnutrition, and disease would dwindle us to numbers where healthy/nearby breeding partner are scarce. This wouldn't even take into account the sudden infrastructure, knowledge, and skilled workforce lost in a global nuclear war...the stuff critical for our survival in this scenario (especially knowledge).
We'd essentially be living on a hostile, foreign planet which our bodies had no time to adapt to.

Re: What is the greatest threat to the future of humanity?
If I'm rating fears on a scale of 0 to 10, I give pandemics/superbugs a 2/10, nuclear war a 1/10, and AI a 0/10.
I think climate and overpopulation are a concern, but not in the same way most would.
Advanced countries will be able to work around issues of climate even if food and water will no longer be as abundant and cheap as they are today. The problem is going to be the inevitable refugee crisis from developing countries where people are reproducing like rabbits.
If the day comes when there's unprecedented famines in the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the poorest parts of Latin America the west will either have to go full Donald Trump and put up physical barriers to keep people out or keep living under the delusion that they can assimilate very large numbers of third-worlders. And of course the western countries will probably roll the dice and open up the doors because their birth rates are so low, which will create all kinds of fiscal and social problems and allow Trumpian populists to win elections.
I honestly think people are going to be around in this world for a very long time. But we might be seeing the world today being about as good as it's ever going to get.

Re: What is the greatest threat to the future of humanity?
In hindsight, I screwed the poll question up. I should have asked something along the lines of "What is the most significant imminent threat to the future of humanity?"
One of the reasons I asked is that while I think that climate change is a significant issue I think that overpopulation has the potential to be an even greater issue. And as Pwns pointed out, population is most out of control in third world countries.

When we are too many, we'll eat each other like hamsters in a cage. It is already starting.
Outside of that, a meteor. But a comet would be cooler.

Dammit. Voted pandemic and should have gone other.
I'm most worried we'll poison ourselves in some manner. The detox system is pretty hardcore, but can be beaten. Won't be mass extinction, but a quality of health issue.
