I read this piece from a friend of mine in my Facebook feed today. Kalmie and I are closer than previously thought!

:+1:

When I was in grad school, most of my cohort was at least a generation younger. We got along fine for the most part: I was kind of a father/grandfather figure. Most of them had shockingly little knowledge of history, to the extent the subject came up in class. But there was one whiny 56-year-old woman who sucked up to all the professors with every leftist cliche in the book. To their credit, the profs generally ignored her.

She doesn’t need anyone to provide a comfortable environment for her. What she meant by “safe space” was that she was happy to be in an environment where difficult subjects can be discussed openly, without the risk of disrespect or harsh judgement.
What? A place "without the risk of disrespect or harsh judgement" IS a comfortable environment.
An "uncomfortable environment" is a place where you are challenged to persuade or convince people to side with your views when they illicit harsh judgement. This forum for example. She couldn't survive.

You should hear Jim Webb talk about his time at Georgetown as a vet while the VN war was still going on

Probably not but this place is exceptional. Full of thick skinned and funny dudes. It’s akin to the comedy scene being the last bastion of cultural truth telling allowed. It’s also not for everybody.

I appreciated the contradictions in the article. He’s defending (and softening) the intentions of respectful dialogue while acknowledging the positivity of challenging his own safe space where he presumes to be the dummy. CS is harsh but also a safe space in a way because you can speak your mind without worrying to offend.

The guy is right, but that still leaves the question of why college administrations bend over backwards to placate a loud mob minority.

It's really a microcosm of what's going on with politics in the US and Europe with left-wing parties trying to win elections on Twitter instead of among the people. Of course voters can push back at it by electing guys they wouldn't normally touch with a ten-foot pole, but college administrators won't put to a student vote adding a $300 fee for a mandatory white privilege seminar.

Eventually I think it'll be the liberal faculty that will have to save higher ed once they see the woke mobs are threatening academic freedom and their tenure and promotions (that's already starting to happen, but it'll get worse).

I’ll be dead so I don’t really care

But it would be nice to live long enough to find out if the Fermi Paradox is true

What part do you have a problem with? You don't think administrators pander to the angry student mobs? They took John Calhoun's name off of a college.

The part about winning elections disregarding the people and twitter. Neither side has a monopoly there.

I’m intrigued, Cleets. What do you mean by “not soon enough”? Might as well pursue that thought right here.

Every aging generation:
Expresses dissatisfaction with the youth whilst simultaneously glorifying itself in a sad epilogue
I always hoped my generation would be the first to break the cycle

but here we are... not dying off fast enough
and glorifying ourselves all the while

Jesus, Cleets. I expect to hear that kind of neg-head talk out of Tripz and his ilk, not you. Maybe we should pursue the Governor Dick Lamm (remember him?) philosophy and be done with it. :ohno:
