1) Establish a police state
2) Eliminate the private sector
3) Implement socialism (government owns or controls all means of production, distribution and exchange)

Those three things are contrary to the very character of this country and they are not going to happen without a revolution and much bloodshed. If you want to save lives, why not just move to a country that already has a system you desire?

I consider myself a rational, non-violent person but I will take up arms and fight against any serious attempt to achieve any of those 3 objectives and I'm positive that I'm not alone.

You know what sucks...having nothing to do with slavery and still being blamed for it simply b/c of my skin color.
I'll blame people who continue to vote for politicians who support private prison systems, the expansion and militarization of police departments, voter suppression through loopholes, harsh penalties for minor crimes, and making laws and court systems barely navigable for common folk.

Also slavery is still legal in the US per the 13th Amendment. Putting someone in prison for non-violent offenses, giving them no political voice while inside, and making them work for privatized profits IS slavery. These injustices are on us as a society.
Oh help me Rhonda. Slavery is not legal. Those people broke the rules that our society put in place. They're being punished. You want to talk about reform, that's one thing. But to say a serial killer serving time is a slave is fucking stupid.

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation

Literally legal, and gives incentive for people be thrown into prison for free labor.

Yes, it is China's fault. No one is forgetting, but that can be addressed at the national and the international stage after this is over.

And how is this anything short of a disaster? The world economy is on the brink of collapse, unemployment is quickly rising, people are dying left and right, the projection for US deaths is now at 100,000 to 200,000 people, the medical community is stressed and expected to break in many areas, and we've yet to contain a highly contagious virus.

Are there glimmers of hope? Yes, but this virus has been a complete disaster.
I was referring to Trump handling of this being a "disaster". Of course this Chinese Flu pandemic is a health and economic disaster for millions.

Too bad we're still sinning.
All nations have sinned, are sinning and will sin again in the future. You are fixated on what we've done and continue to do wrong and give too little credit for the many good things we've accomplished.

As a student of history and lover of science fiction, I loved the book Pastwatch by Orson Scott Card. That book made me wonder about the what if's of major history. What if the Persians had overrun Greece? What if Subutai and the Mongols had continued to conquer Europe? What if the US didn't exist in its current form? What if the founding fathers hadn't revolted? What if the British had won? What if the North had lost? How would world history change as a result? Would the world be a better or worse place?

Yes we have sinned and continue to sin but I strongly believe that the world would be a much worse place if the US didn't exist.

Throwing someone a few cents on the dollar because the states require it is a comically sad way to justify slave labor.

We're not responsible for the sins of the past, but we are responsible for today. Laugh and tip toe around it all you want, but it's a complete injustice of both the Constitution and our criminal justice system. And when history books look back, these sins are on our current society.

Your concept of justice is twisted and partisan. A convicted serial killer is a slave but Brett Kavanaugh should have his life ruined because of unproven allegations.

I'll give you that it's chump change but in doing so you will have to agree that their cost of living is so freaking low, and their access to goods so small, that they are well compensated for those few hours of labor per day.

As a measure of full disclosure I'll add that I'm pen pals with a couple of prisoners in the Missouri DOC. Alyssa Bustamante is one (semi famous). The $10 a month I give her is life changing to her!

How many lives are you changing with your level of compassion about this subject?

And these countries you want us to emulate have done and will continue to do things WRONG as well. If you think their WRONG is better than our WRONG then why not move to one of those countries?

No, I don't want a participation trophy. Overall we have a good thing so I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater either.

You complain about the plight of the poor and minorities and are certain that your brand of socialism will fix these woes. Would you rather be poor or a minority in the US or an average citizen in the USSR in the 1950s and 1960s? Would you rather be an illegal Hispanic immigrant in the US or a Uyghur in China today? Yes, we can improve the opportunities for the poor but trying to create equal outcomes is a race to mediocrity. Working schlubs will all be equal ... equally miserable - that is the end result of true socialism.
