Booster shots to extend the protection of COVID-19 vaccines may be unnecessary for many people, a leading scientist behind the AstraZeneca vaccine said on Friday.

Oxford University Professor Sarah Gilbert told The Telegraph newspaper that immunity from the vaccine was holding up well — even against the delta variant. While the elderly and those who are immune-compromised may need boosters, the standard two-dose regimen is providing lasting protection for most people, she said.

Any wagers that Bidens vaccine mandate for private companies is going to be stuck down by SCOTUS?

An interesting point. ABCNews puts out a graphic everyday on their website and call it a "Covid 19 Vaccine Tracker". Along with it, it includes trending data week to week on cases, deaths, current hospitalizations, and fully vaccinated. For at least two weeks now, well into the school year for most places in the US, the data has been pointing in the right way: Cases are down 12%, deaths are down 1%, hospitalizations are down 5%, and vaccinations are up 19%. That doesn't seem to jibe with the "cases are rising" and the "it's only getting worse" newsfeeds that are ever present these days. Why the disconnect between the data and the headlines?

I'm not sure it ever gets that far. That's the kind of thing a federal judge will be able to strike down. While I think the intent and purpose of the mandate (well, at least the purpose, the intents of most politicians are more dubious) are good, I don't see how this passes legal muster.

The only other aspect I can see for this being put out after Delta started to slow down was in anticipation of the expected fall surge. This way, Biden gets the excuse that people didn't do what we were supposed to do to prevent the next surge, even though there isn't much he could really do.

Hate to always look at the dark aspect, but this whole pandemic has been handled like a total mess.

Agreed. I'm totally on board with a "fast food" tax on places that serve unhealthy food.
The devil would be in the details. What constitutes "unhealthy" and how much would the tax be?

Because the honor system isn’t working. To WB’s point, those caught in the middle for legit medical reasons have a gripe but how many are there? Plus it’s a temporary community health measure which can be relaxed once numbers are driven back down.

What constitutes "unhealthy" depends on where one falls on the woke/regressive spectrum. For the full-on woke, regressive unhealthy is anything with meat, sugar, fat, salt, etc. Exceptions will be made for anything their baristas make for them and people of color will be exempt from any tax.

Funny, well sad, thing is any efforts to push a "healthy" lifestyle will no doubt face backlash from the "body positive" morons out there that push being obese as some kind of accepted idea. :ohno:

According to a recent Study, Moderna is the best so far.
People who were not fully vaccinated this spring and summer were more than 10 times more likely to be hospitalized, and 11 times more likely to die of covid-19, than those who were fully vaccinated, according to one of three major studies published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that highlight the continued efficacy of all three vaccines amid the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.

A second study showed that the Moderna coronavirus vaccine was more effective in preventing hospitalizations than its counterparts from Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson. That assessment was based on the largest U.S. study to date of the real-world effectiveness of all three vaccines, involving about 32,000 patients seen in hospitals, emergency departments and urgent-care clinics across nine states from June through early August.

While the three vaccines were collectively 86 percent effective in preventing hospitalization, protection was significantly higher among Moderna vaccine recipients (95 percent) than among those who got Pfizer-BioNTech (80 percent) or Johnson & Johnson (60 percent). That finding echoes a smaller study by the Mayo Clinic Health System in August, not yet peer-reviewed, which showed the Moderna vaccine to be more effective than Pfizer-BioNTech at preventing infections during the delta wave.

Interesting data here. Essentially, in the UK, vaccines are keeping hospitalizations and deaths down for the vaxxed, but you can see that in the 40-80 age categories, getting vaxxed actually seems to increase your chances of catching COVID.

Interesting to see how age affects your immunity.

I would guess being vaxxed changes social distancing behavior in most.

 Can't assume that it's the vaccine itself that is causing the increase in COVID cases for people 40-80. I would guess that on average people under 40 are more risk tolerant in general so the vaccine would have less of an impact on their risk-taking while it makes people who are 40+ more comfortable with taking risks that increase the chances of their catching COVID.
