Democratic Socialism...the New Capitalism

Or is it “Old New Capitalism...”
The majority of America's largest companies are incorporated in Delaware, and its Supreme Court chief justice, Leo E. Strine, Jr., is a highly influential and outspoken voice on corporate law.
Strine said at a recent CEO conference that those who dismiss presidential candidate Bernie Sanders as a communist are ignorant of the markets and history.
He likened Sanders' policies to those in FDR's New Deal, and said New Deal democracy is the model that allowed the US and its allies to thrive in the 20th century.

Don’t get me started on that jerk. Since he left the bench, he’s been auditioning for a post in an Elizabeth Warren cabinet, and now he has to pirouette to Sanders. The biggest prick to sit on the DE bench in years. Arrogant, self-important blabbermouth whose written opinions were always twice as long as they needed to be because he likes to hear himself talk.

I don’t see a whole lot of similarities between Sanders programs and those of FDR, other than government sponsorship. The focus is entirely different. Much of what FDR started is still with us in our current system and makes it what it is today. Much of what Sanders wants is to tear down that system.

My favorite personal story about him involves a case I had in front of him about 15 years ago, when he was still a trial judge. I represented the defendant and moved to dismiss the complaint. As I saw it, there was one glaring legal defect, and my opening brief was 8 pages long (the rules allowed 50). I won the motion, but this judge issued a long published opinion that went off on another issue that he was interested in — not necessary to resolve my motion — and he had the gall to criticize defense counsel (me) for the lack of “more helpful briefing.”

Interesting comment since so many of FDR's "New Deal" programs were struck down as unconstitutional.

I have to kind of defend Bernie, here. I get a chuckle at Democrats who are complaining about things Bernie said about Cuba and the Soviet Union in the 1980s. Those people ether have bad memory or don't know back in that time it was in vogue for mainstream Democrats to gush about how great communist health care and education was. It's going to be funny reading donk editorials in the coming months that sound like something Mona Charen wrote.
Bernie doesn't have to be honest about what MFA and free college would entail to win, but he does need to push back against the socialist label and tell people he more represents the European economic models and not those of Cuba or Venezuela. I don't think he'll do that, but he is wise enough to try and minimize talking about radioactive issues like reparations, "equal pay" for women, guns, and abortion.

Funny. How come there's no video from the 80's of any other "mainstream Democrats" gushing about how great communism is?

I had to do a double check and make sure Ivy wasn't describing me ^ in that sentence...
Needless to say I was relieved to discover he was talking about somebody else

Yep. As could some of Bernie’s. We all know the New Deal had its successes and failures. What establishment Dems fail to understand is negotiating 101. They argue from the middle and allow the debate to swing right. Bernie wouldn’t get everything and and probably just nominal changes and that’s ok.

Although I am sure he would say he has “evolved” on the issue, Bernie has actually enjoyed a pretty good voting score from the NRA.
Communists usually need those guns

Listen Mr. Fancy Pants...it was simply a twist on the “it’s funny cuz it’s true” colloquialism.
And it is.
