CS Book Club, Spring 2020

OK, you sumbitches, I suppose most of us have more time for pleasure reading these days.
Just finished Chances Are... by my favorite novelist, Richard Russo. The plot is a bit more contrived than his earlier works like Nobody’s Fool and Empire Falls, but it was entertaining nonetheless.
Now reading The Unsettling of Europe by Peter Gatrell. Fascinating study of the effects of migration on Western Europe since WWII, written by a UK professor with a pro-migration viewpoint. Honest portrayal of the pluses and minuses of mass migration.

Just started "The Decline and Fall of the British Empire 1781-1997" by Piers Brendon. Seems interesting so far, but the author is from England and can't spell right.

Tara Westover / This chick is incredible... and her book "Educated" is wonderful
Tara Westover is an American author living in the UK. Born in Idaho to a father opposed to public education, she never attended school. She spent her days working in her father's junkyard or stewing herbs for her mother, a self-taught herbalist and midwife. She was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom, and after that first taste, she pursued learning for a decade. She graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in 2008 and was subsequently awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She earned an MPhil from Trinity College, Cambridge in 2009, and in 2010 was a visiting fellow at Harvard University. She returned to Cambridge, where she was awarded a PhD in history in 2014.

Had this one recommended to me...it kinda reminds me of some letters you see in advice columns that seem just a little too wild to be believed. I'm more inclined to believe Westover's family's lawyer than her TBH. But whether it's true or creative writing or something in between, some good writing.

Just finished Wit’s End by James Geary. This was a short examination of the nature, origins, and cultural accoutrements of...wit. Very anecdotal and full of illustrative examples/jokes.
I’m now starting on a recent history of the French Revolution: A New World Begins, by Jeremy D. Popkin of the University of Kentucky.
