I fully expect NDSU to have to change the name of "The Bison" within my lifetime as some tribes consider Bison to be scared and cultural appropriations. I really hope I am just being a pessimist though.

Someone help me out. Are boycotts free speech or suppression of free speech? Hard to keep track.

This is how a libertarian society eventually finds equilibrium.
Who is it more profitable (or less damaging) to go with? Or, if you are the NFL and you stand to lose capital no matter what you do, then eventually you’ll conclude that you are free to go with your convictions.

Hhhhmmm, what should I be more concerned about:
1. Millionaire NFL players who might be pressured to not protest on the job in a way many might find disrespectful when the vast majority of people couldn't get away with that.
2. People calling for academics to have their honors, appointments, and journal editorships revoked because they dare say that -isms don't create disparities between groups of people in society (see what happened recently with Steven Pinker and the Linguistics organization, people who don't have his notoriety couldn't survive that). Also see this:
https://www.conservativereview.com/news ... shootings/
I realize at one time you were more likely to get fired for being a commie or homo than not being woke but today it's no contest which side of the culture war is more feared by corporate America, big tech, the media, and higher ed administrations. Being told you can't be on the field for the national anthem just isn't the same as being fired because some soccer player's wife said something not PC. There's just no comparison.

A band changing their name to appear less racist, finding out that that name has been used by another artist already for years, then suing that artist, who is black, to stop using her name so you can use the name because you want to look woke...

I wonder if the Goya boycott will be as successful as the Chic Fil A and MyPillow boycotts. Why do you think?Ivytalk wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 3:19 amYou tell me, Goya King.Skjellyfetti wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 6:18 pm Someone help me out. I’m going to send Analjelly a “CARE package” consisting of a can of Goya beans and a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, nestled in a MyPillow.

I think Trip needs one too. And maybe something from Hobby Lobby to brighten up their homes.

Karen and Kevin's everywhere rushing to buy Goya products, then trying to figure out what to do with them...
Re: Cancel Culture thread
Since the boycott of MyPillow, the company has needed to expand its manufacturing facility and has branched out to selling sheets, towels, comforters, etc.
Chick-Fil-A has gone from outside the top 10 to the No. 3 fast foot retailer in the US in terms of total sales, bettered only by McDonalds and Starbucks. It does a remarkable sales-per-store of over $4.3 million.
The Goya guy has got to be thrilled.
A few years back, I saw an interview William Donohue, the head of the Catholic League. He was asked why he never organizes boycotts against companies that he thinks have engaged in anti-Catholic conduct. He said something like, "They don't work. Sales are never really affected. In many cases, sales increase when some people call for a boycott."
Boycotts don't work.
