The Youth Vote

I went to https://ropercenter.cornell.edu/how%20groups%20voted and looked at how the 18 through 29 year old age group voted in each presidential election 1976 through 2016. I have a lot of speculative thoughts about how things have gone. The results are in a table below. Some objective observations:
There is a "statistically significant" trend such that Democrats have done better with the group as time went on.
The 18 through 29 year old group has not always voted Democrat. 1980 was essentially a tie. Republicans actually won the 18 through 29 year old group in 1984 and 1988. Reagan won by a substantial margin in 1984.
The people who were in the 18 through 29 year old age groups in 1984 and 1988 when Republicans won the group were 46 through 61 in 2016 and will be 50 through 65 this time.
