The rednecks win the ignorance prize but the educated morons win the sanctimoniousness and self-righteous prize in a rout.

Specify which one you are, and then I'll decide.kalm wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 5:17 pm From another thread. We all probably have friends from both groups. So which do you prefer to hang with?
I agree with you and AZ to an extent here, but I’d rather be surrounded by educated morons than non-educated morons. Not me, and not by a long shot. Educated morons are some of the absolute WORST at looking down their noses at anyone who doesn’t have an advanced degree, isn’t considered an SME in their field, etc., etc. I LOVE hanging with rednecks. Absolutely some of the funnest people on the planet to hang with and party with. Down to earth, grounded, and just 99% of the time good people.

Sounds like they aren't educated morons then, just educated.kalm wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 9:48 am I’m fortunate to have grown up and still live in Cheney. He and his professor buddies drove old trucks and would hunt, fish, and drink cheap beer after work. The local diner was their hang for coffee. 50 Most Educated Places in America
1. Arlington, VA
2. Alexandria, VA
3. Columbia-Clarksville-Dayton-Glenelg-Glenwood-West Friendship, MD
5. Fairfax-Clifton-Herndon-Springfield-Annandale, VA
7. Ashburn-Dulles-Lansdowne-Leesburg-Sterling, VA
8. Rockville-Germantown-Bethesda-Gaithersburg, MD
That's basically my entire area in the top 8. I'm surrounded by some of the most arrogant, selfish, rude people who can't drive a car to save their lives. When I visit my family in NC I'm blown away by that fact that people actually say hello to each other and are nice.
When I lived at the beach in DE back in the early 90's, everyone waved to each other as they passed in the car. Folks went to the fire station for casino night. We knew the cops by name. One time while driving home late at night I pulled a guy out of his car in a ditch (he was drunk) and drove him home and it just seemed like the normal thing anyone would have done down there. Now the county has been infiltrated by a bunch of educated assholes from PA, NJ and NY and it's completely changed for the worse.
If you'd rather hang with educated morons, you probably either are one or aspire to be one. I'd rather hang with rednecks every day of the week and definitely twice on Sunday.

My brother is the other type. Loud, idiot (even though he got a private school education and FINALLY finished college in his late 30s), is a know it all and it usually wrong 99% of the time. Is MAGA through and through. Talks like a hick even though it's not natural b/c we all know what his voice sounds like and it isn't that. He's also a Clemson fan...

“Redneck” <> “ignorance”. Just like “highly educated” <> “smart”

That's Southern Illinois exactly and its also the Northern California I grew up in. The cowboys that lived on ranches were usually salt of the earth, the ones that lived in town and wore a hat and boots were usually assholes.kalm wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 9:48 amI’m fortunate to have grown up and still live in Cheney. Living in a very red culturally American gothic 3/4’s of one of the most blue states in the union is interesting. But I sound like you when I visit Seattle.
Being married to a professor means I've spent enough time around the highly educated to not be all that impressed by a phd - bonfires, banjos, and beer for me, every time.

Re: Educated Morons or Rednecks?
I honestly would prefer to hang with highly educated people. I find that when I hang with "rednecks" I have to withdraw, act stupid, ect. I can't get into meaningful conservations. I have to be careful to avoid getting into intellectual conservations. I have to act like I am dumber than I am to fit in and not be perceived as "uppity." That's the honest truth.
I do it, by the way. I tone down my vocabulary, etc. But I am more comfortable being with people such that I don't have to do that.

Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Re: Educated Morons or Rednecks?
Give me the "rednecks" any day of the week. Educated morons are still at the end of the day, a moron. I have had better (in depth) conversations with self-educated people (blue-collar/hillbillys/old school rednecks) than those with Ph D's. There is a big difference in being educated and having an education.
That said, I go where the tannerite is.
