Austerity for Thee

Post by kalm »

Starve the beast, Two Santa Claus Theory...it’s time again for the debt to REALLY matter for the Republican Party and so-called conservatives.

Is this supposed to be what happens when America is run like a business?
With Donald Trump having departed the White House, many Republicans are suddenly rediscovering the dangers of budget deficits, after four years of conspicuous indifference. This was entirely predictable: for the last 45 years, the GOP has done the same thing every time a Democrat has held the presidency, and only then.

In fact, we can identify three long cycles, during each of which Republicans reversed their fierce opposition to deficits once they won the presidency: the 1980s, 1990-2008, and 2009-20.......

Bush’s son, George W Bush, let the Paygo provisions expire after becoming president in 2001. In that year and again in 2003, Bush Jr followed the Reagan playbook by enacting big tax cuts. He also increased federal expenditure during his first term, at four times the rate that Clinton had – not just on defence but domestic spending as well. Even with unemployment down to 5% in 2005, Bush ignored warnings that running large budget deficits during an economic recovery would leave less fiscal space to respond to the next recession or crisis. Three years earlier, his vice-president, Dick Cheney, reportedly said: “Reagan proved deficits don’t matter.” The national debt increased by another $4tn.

FYP :-P

Today's Republicans are self-serving, hypocritical RINOs when it comes to deficits.

The income tax rates that Reagan inherited were obscene and needed to be cut.

We're acting like the money we're borrowing/printing won't need to be paid back but eventually it will be. If we keep this up we're following Greece, Italy, Spain, etc. down the road to financial calamity.

I chastised someone just yesterday about fretting about the deficit. Said, you can’t spend like a drunken sailor and then only care when a Dem is in office. it either matters or it doesn’t.

Yep- Massie is one of the few in Congress to practice this, and he got the ire of most conks and donks and Trump when he held up the 1st porkulous bill.

On a similar note, I see many conks on FB now pissing and moaning about “Biden driving up gas prices” and it pisses me off....saying how “it was only $1.89 in October and now it’s $2.39!”....newsflash, while Biden’s pipeline policy stance will ultimately impact oil/gas prices somewhat, I don’t think that’s what’s driving current prices...it’s more related to supply interruption (weather related) and lack of fuel, as well as demand increases related to states/economies beginning to open back up.

Being so superficial when it comes to things like this really don’t help ANY discussion.

Are you saying I can't blame every single COVID death since January 20 on Biden?

Listen, I didn’t like it when idiots did it to Trump, so turning around and doing it to Biden is just bullshit. Are there things Biden is doing that will drive up oil prices? Yes. Is the current price increase due to that? categorically NOT. It’s that simple.

What if I do it knowing it's bullshit but enjoying turning the tables to highlight the absurdity?
