N. LV Mayor Flips Parties
He says he's switching to the GOP because he just can't identify with the "elitist" and "socialist" views of the modern Democratic Party. He's right....

The trends say the Country is going to become more Democratic. We'll see what happens.
The Republicans still have a chance to start acting rationally. But I don't see any evidence that it's going to happen.

Anyone that thinks the Democratic Party is socialist is delusional.
People are leaving the Party of Insurrection in droves - sickened by what happened on January 6th, and the GOP embrace of it.
Tens of thousands in states like Colorado, Penn, Arizona dropping the QOP.

If true, I'm not sure where the rational people are going to find a home. It's certainly not the Democratic party.

We have more choices, but no one likes to be on the losing side (as a third party would almost always be) so game theory and human nature, as well as 200+ years of American history, point to us always having two major parties and only two major parties. Darn science.kalm wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 5:53 amIt’s almost like we need more than two choices or something...UNI88 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 7:55 pm

Re: N. LV Mayor Flips Parties
Nice dodge. We've had 3rd parties in the US multiple times in the past 200+ years. It's my argument, which you can't seem to counter, that due to the setup of our government (namely the executive being separate from the legislature - if we had a prime minister setup I'd argue that 3rd parties would be less ephemeral) that we're never going to have the permanent presence of a 3rd party (let alone even more than that). The 3rd party always gets consolidated into one of the existing major parties, the "big tent" effect. I'd even go further, JSO likes to rail on that we're going to be a one party system pretty soon and then will be that way for decades to come (his position that the Democratic party is on the verge of decades-long one-party dominance). That same setup of the government, and our proven history, is that when we've had one party become dominate it almost immediately spawns a second party. I think that also goes to the contrarian nature of people in general - can't argue if there's not another side.

I'm a proponent of a 3rd party and I can admit that his arguments are solid.
Our best chance to return to rationality in government might be open primaries where the top 2 vote getters face off in the general election. In heavily Conk and Donk districts, the alternative candidate is more likely to be a moderate who will get the votes of members of the opposing party and independents. It might help get some of the extremists who won't listen or compromise.

Share of Democrats in U.S. Spikes After Biden Win
April 7, 2021 at 5:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 35 Comments
A new Gallup poll found that 49% of respondents consider themselves Democrats or leaning that way, while 40% consider themselves Republicans or lean that way — the largest gap in almost a decade.
Gallup said the jump comes mostly from Republicans leaving the party at the end of President Donald Trump’s tenure. Only 25% of U.S. adults firmly identify with the Republicans, down from 29% late last year.

Since the calendar turned to 2021, 10,452 Republican registrations have switched to Democrat in Pennsylvania, while just 4,942 have switched to Republican. Over 4,400, meanwhile, have moved from Democrat or Republican to another party.

As for PA, voter registration matters little, folks like me flip all the time depending on what primary we want to vote in. I'm currently a Democrat, but will have to look at what races are coming up that year and I change according to which one I want to vote in. School board elections this cycle, and those folks tend to run simultaneously as both Democrat and Republican so it tends not to matter then in the primary.

Re: N. LV Mayor Flips Parties
Well, the way you wrote it implied each state. Like you said, no biggie. And like I said, voter registration matters very little. These aren't partisans who blindly vote straight party no matter what. Most people vote cross ticket all the time. Heck, even this past election showed that - Biden won at the top but the GOP had a very good night down ticket. The GOP keeps getting less and less popular, yet still hold, and made gains, in most local races and state legislatures. For a party that is waning in power, they sure do have a lot of power.dbackjon wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 2:40 pmI said tens of thousands in states like...I proved that tens of thousands have left the GOP.GannonFan wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 11:41 am

Have been doing some reading on ranked choice, along with some other voting methods and some have the potential to hopefully shake things around a bit. Will see how (or if) they are even implemented.
