Is Fox News, news?

Post by kalm »

File under “water is wet” and yes, it’s all (Legacy media) infotainment to a degree. But Fox is special in this regard. Same can be said for Twitter. Lack of critical thinking and confirmation bias are the real culprits. Fix those and Fox’s influence becomes irrelevant.

Fixing those problems is scary and uncomfortable. Makes one not fit in very well sometimes. God bless American conformity and power dynamics!
Fox News isn't news

A new study suggests Fox News viewers aren’t just manipulated and misinformed — they are literally being made ignorant by their consumption habits.

The problem with Fox “News,” the cable TV channel, isn’t just what it is — it’s also what it isn’t.

It is often a purveyor of propaganda and misinformation. What it’s not is a source of “news” — at least not by any normal definition.

According to Broockman and Kalla, when these Fox viewers watched CNN, they heard about all sorts of things Fox wasn’t telling them.
That’s one of the conclusions I drew from a fascinating new study in which arch-conservative Fox TV viewers were paid to watch CNN for a month. The study, titled “The manifold effects of partisan media on viewers’ beliefs and attitudes: A field experiment with Fox News viewers,” was performed by a pair of political scientists: David Broockman, who teaches at UC-Berkeley, and Joshua Kalla, who teaches at Yale.

According to Broockman and Kalla, when these Fox viewers watched CNN, they heard about all sorts of things Fox wasn’t telling them. They processed that information. They took it in. They became more knowledgeable about what was really going on in the United States.

The experiment didn’t change their political preferences — certainly not in just one month. But it slightly altered their perceptions of certain key issues and political candidates.

Oh, yes. That is RICH. Replace “Fox News” with “CNN” or “MSNBC” and you could literally leave every other word the same and it would still apply.

And yeah, you hear things on CNN they don’t say on Fox: like “Hunter’s laptop is fake” or “Boys can have babies” or “boys can have periods” or “Jan 6th was worse than 9/11”, or “having 10,000 child porn images on your computer doesn’t make you a pedophile”….I could go on and on…

I mean, the list of bullshit they spew on those other channels is truly mind boggling. Talk about “no critical thinking”.

This might be THE dumbest thing you’ve EVER posted, klammy, and that is saying a LOT.

An interesting study:

https://phys.org/news/2022-04-fox-news- ... p-cnn.html

The investigators randomly selected Fox News viewers to be paid to watch CNN instead for a while. And the distribution of opinions shifted.

They did consider CNN and MSNBC, as well as Fox, to be partisan media. They went with testing Fox viewers because Trump was President.

-They peddled the Hunter laptop is Russian misnformation hoax as if it was real, which was a FAKE NEWS.
-They peddled the Trump/Russia collusion hoax as if it was real, which was a FAKE NEWS.
-They peddled the the Jessie Smollett hoax as if it was real, which was FAKE NEWS.
-They’ve peddled Jan 6 was an insurrection, which is FAKE NEWS.
-They’ve peddled that Nicholas Sandman was a racist, which was FAKE NEWS.

They reported that 50 former intelligence officials said the story had the hallmarks of a Russian disinformation effort. That is true. Also, I must say that the conservative media are way overplaying their hand on this right now. They are acting as though a recent Washington Post report really helps their narrative. For example, the Fox News article at https://www.foxnews.com/media/washingto ... y-coverage has a headline that includes the language:
Washington Post authenticates laptop after dismissing ‘fake' scandal in 2020
But here is a quote from the Washington Post story that is IN that fox News piece:
Over the course of 14 months, the Chinese energy conglomerate and its executives paid $4.8 million to entities controlled by Hunter Biden and his uncle, according to government records, court documents and newly disclosed bank statements, as well as emails contained on a copy of a laptop hard drive that purportedly once belonged to Hunter Biden,"
"Purportedly" is an important qualifier there. According to the Oxford dictionary, "purportedly" means "used to say that something has been stated to have happened or to be true, but this might not be the case." The Washington Post did not "authenticate" the laptop.

I must say, also, that the big thing in the Washington Post story is about a possible interaction with China that has nothing to do with what the big thing was in the original New York Post story (it had to do with Ukraine).

Also, I have seen nothing so far in the recent spate of stories that the incident is not associated with a Russian disinformation campaign.
-They peddled the Trump/Russia collusion hoax as if it was real, which was a FAKE NEWS.
They reported that there was an FBI then later a Special Counsel investigation into possible collusion between members of the Trump Campaign and Russians. That was true. Also, the Mueller report did find collusion, by any reasonable definition of the term, between the Trump campaign director and a Russian intelligence operative. The report was spun as showing "no collusion" when it did not. The authors specifically stated that they were not looking to establish whether there was "collusion" as a general matter. They were looking for violation of a specific statute.
They peddled the the Jessie Smollett hoax as if it was real, which was FAKE NEWS.
They reported that there was a reported assault on Smollett and the story quickly evolved into one in which Smollett was found to have arranged a fake incident.
-They’ve peddled Jan 6 was an insurrection, which is FAKE NEWS.
The oxford definition of "insurrection" is "a violent uprising against an authority or government." It's reasonable to call the January 6 thing an insurrection.
-They’ve peddled that Nicholas Sandman was a racist, which was FAKE NEWS.
I don't think they called him a racist. They depicted him a a Trumpist who was being a jerk. And i think that he was. I went through watching like an hour of that video so I could see everything that led up to the moment captured in that picture because someone said you had to do that to be fair. And the guy was being a jerk.
-They’ve peddled that Kyle Rittenhouse was a white Supremacist (FAKE NEWS) who illegally transported a firearm across state lines (FAKE NEWS) and was guilty of murder (FAKE NEWS).
I don't recall them saying he was a White Supremacist. But I do think there was a racial element to his decision to be there. I did once hear discussion in which people said he transported a firearm across State lines but I heard them contemporaneously corrected. And he should have been convicted of something. If coming in from out of State to run around with a long gun in a situation like that then having it end up in fatalities like that is not illegal, it should be and they need to make a law to make it so. He had no business being our there playing Mighty Militia Man.

Going by the democrats own definition, a peaceful protest.
Either you're deflecting or you agree with the Dems that the AnTIFa riots were peaceful protests.

So you're going to deflect and not answer the question. Got it.

It was a 99.9% peaceful protest/.1% not peaceful.

What was their intent? Were they just protesting the election results or trying to change them?

Attorney General Barr suggested that the AnTiFa/BLM "protesters" be charged with sedition. IMO, that charge would be more likely to stick to the January 6 "protesters" than the AnTiFa/BLM "protesters".

That .1% called for the murder of the Vice President and tried to obstruct congress. But let's just ignore that.

Sedition but BDK would rather ghost this thread then admit it.

And BLM/ANTIFA have openly called for the destruction of our government and destroyed billions of dollars of private property and infrastructure in the process.

They did and guess what, I didn't make excuses or rationalize it like others here do. I've said the BLM and Jan 6 protestors that have committed crimes should be punished - I seriously don't understand why that's an issue? What's wrong in saying that anyone that breaks the law, regardless of political affiliation or how much we like them and their opinions, should be punished.

Breaking the law, fine. But just because one happened in DC and the others happened in other cities and towns shouldn’t differentiate. And when BLM burned DC several months before, why aren’t THOSE people being charged with sedition? I mean, it’s literally their stated goal….
