"Conservatives" and Hungary

So now CPAC is having a conference in Hungary. The CPAC web site has a news release with the Statement:
It is inspiring to be among people who yearn for freedom and autonomy, and who believe that their nation should make decisions concerning their people, and a political leadership who understands that this nation should make its decisions and not Brussels, and not Geneva, and not Paris, and not Berlin, and not Washington, DC.
See https://www.conservative.org/2022/05/19 ... statement/

From what I can tell, the American "conservative" movement appears to think that what is going on in Hungary is something we should emulate. See Tucker Carlson. See CPAC. Do you disagree with that assessment?

Do you think the United States should aspire to be like Hungary?

I think the fact that things like CPAC and Tucker Carlson acting like Hungary is something to admire validates my belief that what's going on with the "conservative" movement right now presents the risk of authoritarianism in the United States.

To me, a true conservative would not look at Hungary as a model. It's not a free country. It does not have a free press. It does not have academic freedom. It does not have freedom of thought. So on an so forth.

Well the left thinks we should aspire to be like Venezuela. And we’re damned near there.

If you will ever take a look out from under your rock, we're pretty much there, Chief.

I think most would prefer a Nordic including you.

However, Venezuela is an interesting comparison. We stopped in Caracas on a cruise in the late 90’s as it was transitioning from neoliberalism to socialism. They were in the midst of a public workers strike. Garbage collection had ceased for a few weeks with trash all over the place. There were various types of paramilitary type police on motorcycles and street corners with rifles slung around their backs. The gated communities were reinforced with heavy fences and security gates. The golf course community we went past was very nice.

Only thing Nordic that is worth mentioning is the scenery, Swedish woman's beach volleyball team, Nokia, and that they do good in winter sports.

Their decades long social experiment is fast approaching its expiration date and which they are going to have to make some hard choices (they will not IMHO).

I’ve been to Hungary (Budapest in 2019). I liked it.

I know, cool story.
