Me personaly,


IM TURNING EVERY LIGHT IN MY HOUSE ON. Turning my chainsaw, my lawn mower, my snow blower, my generators, my concrete saw, and my weed-eater on. AND FOR ALL DAY LONG.

If it was for environmentalism, you would have pesticides in your water, dirty air, more expensive fuel, less food to eat.

If you want to waste a bunch of money making a stupid statement, go ahead.

ITs because of environ MENTAL ists, that it is illegal to drill for oil in our own country. And they are responsable for lower fuel costs? I DONT THINK SO.

whether or not there is "global warming", there is nothing man can do to stop it, it wasnt our fault that the Ice age ended, maybe instead of blaming humans for global warming, we should blame the Earth, its just going through another one of its fazes that humans cannot control. So there is no point in even trying. Let me guess, its going to be our faults when the next Ice Age happens huh? Watch out for GLOBAL COOLING.

I'm no fan of down-your-nose "do-as-i-say-not-as-i-do" environmentalism... besides, individual behaviors really can't help or hurt the environment too greatly... it's a question of policy, thats where this can be realized... not harping and moralizing.

Things I'd like to see to help the environment (policy level)

Tax incentives to buy super efficient refrigerators - both commercial and residential. something like 40% of electricity in the home is used on refrigeration... make doing the right thing by letting people deduct the full cost of a new efficient fridge from their taxes.

X-Prize (significant) for economically practical biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based plastics. right now it's not economically viable.

a 5 to 10 cent excise tax on bottles of water smaller than 1/2 gallon. it's a retarded waste of resources (for the most part)

accelerate the approval process for nuclear power plants, and get them online as soon as is possible.

tax incentives to get those in rural areas to eliminate strightpipe sewer set ups. some of the city slickers might be surprised how much untreated waste still makes it straight in to the water supply.

i'd like to have a couple cities attempt a municipal compost pickup option. all biodegradable waste would be pre-sorted and sent to a compost site where it would be broken down in to nutrient rich organic fertilizer to be sold by the city. (could pay for itself... or it could just take a HUGE amount of garbage out of the wastestream)

but if you notice... very little of this impedes the daily lives of consumers. environmentalism works when it can be integrated seamlessly in to daily life... otherwise you're wasting your time. lectures about leaving lights on "do you know how bad ... is?" only serve to create WCRyan types...

I equate this sort of logic to a scenario where a wife volunteers to wash the family car, and instead of graciously accepting her help, the husband says "It ain't dirty, ya dumb bitch," pops the hood, and takes a shit in the air filter.

Probably not as much as the pork that's been spent trying to grow non-native crops in the CV with subsidized water while paying SE farmers not to grow those same crops which are native to their climate in an effort to alleviate the crop surpluses...

- This is a must if we are really serious about limiting CO2 emissions. I know we have to find a place for the waste, but I believe in the near future we'll have the technology to recycle all of the waste, not just some as the French do now.

- Charlotte/ Mecklenburg County, doesn't quite do that, at least selling it. They do have a service where they will come pick up branches, shrubs, etc. Larger items you can take to the recycling center. They grind all of this into mulch. Now, it's not top of the line obviously, but it still looks good. I bought two truck loads this month for $20 ($10 each) and landscaped the yard. From the people I speak with in the county, they make money selling it that cheap. It's a great service, especially as there is no private company (that I'm aware of) offering this here.

I agree with you on almost all of these options TTBF. The only one I would have a problem with is an excise tax on bottles of water. I myself just use a nalgene bottle with ice. But, in our system (for better or worse) it's going to take tax incentives to get this stuff done.

Yesterday (Earth day) I burned a big pile of leaves because a friend of mine was out of town and I couldn't borrow his truck and take it to the yard waste disposal center.

I didn't eat any foods that cause flatulence, though.

Yesterday was in fact, Secretaries Day, so I celebrated earth day without interruption. Finished installing my new super efficient underground drip system in the garden, and planted about 400 live onion plants of differing varieties.

That should qualify as a positive earth day event.
