My take is that it brings in money from those who want to pay more in taxes. Brings in money from surrounding areas and alleviates some of the burden from the locals. Provides several good paying jobs, helps support education.
If the people that play can't do math, they would have benefited from better schools anyway.

Not a great history out there for gambling states who pass these initiatives under the guise of "help the schools." Seems the legislatures have a habit of getting their greasy mitts on the money by way of the general fund, and less and less actually makes it to the schools. Meanwhile the poor, ignorant, and stupid individuals (and there are many) pull the handle with the kids milk money thinking they will hit it big and everything will be ok. After waking up with a hangover, and realizing they blew the months grocery money with 25 days to go in the month, the kids suffer.
Gambling and lotteries are also known as "the sucker tax" preying on the uneducated or the habitual gamblers.
These games should be for those who can afford to lose the money, however those kind of folks like to go to Vegas, and Atlantic City, not down to the local Quick Mart/liquor store/casino.
