Obama to unveil big increase in required mpg

Post by dbackjon »

New rule will set 42 mpg for cars starting in 2016, sources say

New cars and trucks will have to get 30 percent better mileage starting in 2016 under an Obama administration move to curb emissions tied to smog and global warming, sources said Monday.

President Barack Obama was expected to adopt the higher mileage standards on Tuesday, administration sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of the official announcement.

The new requirement will mark the first time that limits on greenhouse gases will be linked to federal standards for cars and light trucks.

You mean limiting the amount of fuel one can consume for every mile one drives? Explain to me how the corvette, impala, challenger, jeep grand cherokee, 300m, charger, magnum, camero all are going to exist given their sterotypical American muscle background. Are they switching to a turbo charged 4 cyl like the neon to create that power? God Speed America, this will kill your last demographic in cars. Hell MY car won't even come close to that and it is a MIDSIZE!!!

Oh citdog.

You see, I believe that the United States possess the brains and skills to BUILD 42 mpg SUV's and Trucks. That you can have your Yukon and high mpg.

Obviously, you think we don't.

Sports cars are exempt from this.

They always have been. As long as they pass safety and emissions standards they are ok. But you will pay a little extra on the sticker price for the label "sports cars"

GM didn't have any incentive to do so - they were raking in money on $40,000K SUVs as they were, back when gas was cheap.

Gas prices went up, GM showed how short-sighted they were.

But if we would lease the polar ice caps to Exxon/Mobil then maybe we can just build Excursions, and Hummers?

Uh, bullshit. They would be in a much stronger position right now, especially with the unions.

BS. With unions, retooling is like trying to turn the Titanic. In fact, GM and Chrysler ARE the Titanic.

Agree Z, but carefully read the dbacks post: "If they would have done it years ago."

Nothing has changed, D. They're as slow, inefficient and incapable of change NOW as they were then. If they'd done it THEN, GM and Chrysler would have folded THEN. It's the reason our car companies get their asses handed to them on a regular basis by the Japs.

Agree Z, but this is where government steps in and mandates change (CAFE) like the Ford and Carter administrations did. Producing a product (gas guzzlers) that is a direct threat to our national security is insane. Ford/Carter and now Obama understands this. Government is not all bad.

Had Reagan not allowed MPG standards to rollback and essentially gut all programs researching and developing alternative energy we most likely would not have been attacked, we would ne be at war, we would have been the world leader in green energies instead of France, Norway and Japan, and our auto manufacturers would not have to play catch up and would have a waiting list for their hybrids and electric cars instead of Toyota and Honda.

Reagan eventually allow the MPG

Note - this is AVERAGE for the fleet.

And TECHNOLOGY, Technology, Technology.

When CAFE standards were first introduced, the Big Three cried it was impossible to meet economically. They were wrong (and they knew they could do it, if forced).

They met the standards that were raised back then. No reason to think they could not have done it if forced to in the 90's.

But they were content to rake in the billions from everyone buying SUV's, which was good as long as your business model predicted low fuel prices for eternity.
