Region 16 schools mull Muslim holidays
Prospect (WTNH) - A Connecticut school district representing two towns is considering a proposal to close schools on two Muslim holidays.
About 50 families worship at the Albanian American Moslem Community in Waterbury. But it can be difficult for many to attend.
"For Muslims, we have weekly prayer which is called Juma prayer, and we have it on Friday," said Gazmend Aga of the Albanian American Moslem Community.
Aga is 'Imam,' a spiritual leader at his place of worship, and said it's even worse for major holidays.
"They have to come here to pray, to participate," Aga said.
Now, a sophomore at Woodlands Regional High School wants to change that. The students made a proposal to add two Muslim holidays to the school year, a day at the end of Ramadan and one marking the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Sounds good to me. If they are closing to close for Jewish and Catholic holidays then why shouldn't they observe Muslim holidays if they have a large muslim population?

schools get around that by having "winter break" that coincides with Christmas, and many districts do the same thing with Easter and "spring break"
i don't have a problem with it, just call it something secular... of course, i'm also in favor of year round school, so what do i know...

That is part of my new rules segment. People like this can't tell me how to live my life. That is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. GOD HATES are you kidding. Have they personally talked to him to confirm this? Dragging his name through the mud and then claim that's a Christian value. I'm glad that fat ass Falwell is DEAD, that picture would have been his orgasm of the day. Pathetic.

There has been a move by most school systems to get away from celebrating holidays, unless they are nationally recognized (Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc.). Because of this move, I don't think that Muslim-specific holidays should be taken off. However, if the school system says that they are taking off Christian holidays, then it's only fair to take off days for other religions, too.

You have never lived in any area with a large Jewish population then.

I grew up in an area called "Little Vatican"(Catholics) which was next to "Little Jerusalem"(Hebs). There are lots of Jews here, I just have never seen it.

Jon, in school these days ANYBODY can take ANY day off without a hassle. Unless it's AIMS day.
Fuckin' inmates are runnin' the asylum.
