Nearly six years after Madison police began arming officers with Tasers and four years after the controversial Tasering of a black high school student, police department records suggest minorities have the weapons used against them at a rate far out of proportion with how often they are arrested.

Minorities — especially blacks — were Tasered more than twice as often as whites last year, and more often than whites in three of the last five. In the other two years, about as many whites were Tasered as nonwhites. In each of the five years, nonwhites were arrested for about half as many crimes as whites.

Mark P. Jones, a professor at Rice University who last year co-authored a first-of-its-kind study that found a similar pattern in the use of Tasers by the Houston Police Department, said Madison’s Taser data is not enough to prove bias in their use. But he said it is worthy of closer study.

“What these data point out is that there’s potentially a problem,” said Jones.






What potential problem?


Now, I hate to go Conk and military on this one, but WTF? Black or white, if you present a danger that falls into the realm of possibly being Tasered, you're gonna get Tasered!

Let's see: blacks are arrested twice as often as whites. Blacks are tazered twice as often as whites. I don't see the issue..

They way I read it was whites were twice as likely to be arrested as non-whites. Maybe I'm missing something here Z.

That's how I read it too......but hey, if I did something stupid and had the choice of (1) being tasered or (2) being arrested, arraigned and having a criminal record......I'm 99.999% sure I'd take the taser, learn my lesson and walk on home.

Good, I thought I wasn't crazy.

OK. Mea culpa. I read that wrong. Now I REALLY don't see the problem. TWICE as many whites are being arrested. Who GAS about tazering?

And the Southerners are the racists......

Take it from an ex-cop. Different cultures behave differently towards the police. In some cultures it seems like it is somehow hardwired into the DNA to have a hissy fit when a police officer tells you it's time to come along quietly.

Or, it could all be a coincidence and my 17 years of experiences on a city police department were totally anomalous.
