I've been listening on the all-news station (WTOP) and they are reporting that the 80-ish year old suspect and one security guard were injured and have been transported...and that the suspect is tied to "white-supremacists web sites"...

I love the dizzying amount of spin that says this guy is somehow a leftist... it takes a special kind of delusion wherein both fascism and communism are now magically both "leftist" ideologies...
I don't know whether it's malicious or just stupid, but apparently some people took a pass on political science 101, but spent a lot of time in "revisionist history for the party hack"...
sorry but "left-leaning" and "Hitler supporting" are completely contradictory statements... moreover the guys writings are scary right wing... but i get why the hard core on the right are trying to revise that to somehow absolve themselves of this guy... as i said in another thread, the right needs to do something about the violence from its fringe... someone needs to speak out against it... because the silence, denial (and in the case of Tillers assassin) out and out support for these guys is somewhere between appalling and disgusting.

You are way too sharp of a guy not to realize that you just did what you are saying the right does.

But he's right about facism. Facism is an extreme right wing ideology while communism is an extreme left wing ideology. Now if you go far enough in both directors they end up looking a lot like the other (i.e. Hitler and Stalin).

Hey I get that part of it. The part I was referring to is saying that the republicans allow the fringe to be violent and say nothing about it. I haven't seen one republican doing that but I may have missed one. Trying to paint this guy as one or the other is silly on both sides as the mantra of either political party is not what drives this guys actions.

as i said to z in another thread:
the ramped up rhetoric of the far right that started as it became clear the right was going to lose the election in November has fueled the extreme fringe of their movement to violence... violence they weren't participating in before that time (for over 8 years as a matter of fact)... whereas ELF and ALF are going to commit their terrorist bullshit no matter who is in office
point being... that DHS memo about fringe members of the right lashing out... appears to have been valid... these guys, inflamed by increasingly angry and mutinous rhetoric from their political leaders (whether it's Perry's secessionist talk or Bachmann's "armed and dangerous revolution" comment) are lashing out violently... that's the connection.
i'm not suggesting some grand conspiracy to attack with lone nuts... I'm suggesting that some of the leaders of the right need to check themselves because their rhetoric is inspiring violence. I don't think that's unreasonable or unfair to say. I'm not saying something as absurd as the GOP is fomenting terrorism... they aren't... but they've taken their rhetoric to a point that people are taking the next step and i think they need to speak out and shut it down (not voice support like they did for Tiller's assassin)

I just think it's as big of a stretch of those that blame music for the actions of some crazy nut. I just have trouble making the leap I guess.

it's the idea that these guys have political cover to act. i'm not saying that the GOP or Rush Limbaugh are out there encouraging their fringe base to shoot people... what i am saying is, they've amped up the rhetoric to a point where someone who is "boarderline" gets it in their head that they "must act" to "save america"... that's where i think there is culpability, and i think a scaling back of the rhetoric to a more reasonable point would go a long way to fixing it.
i dont see the comparison between this and blaming say, Marilyn Manson for Columbine. These gunmen have their own motivation, to be sure, but they are egged on by political leaders who talk about needing to "save us from the x menace" or "we need to be armed and ready against this"... that's boarderline incitement (i dont think this was the intent of these guys by any means... but their hyperbole is being taken literally by their fringe elements)

Dude. If there are books out there about liberal fascism, it exists. Just because you want to pigeon hole terms to one side of the political spectrum does not make it true. There are no absolutes.

liberalism and fascism are antithetical ideologies... politically speaking, it's basically impossible to be both...
just as it's basically impossible to be a "conservative" and a "communist"
there may be books out there about it, but they are rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of political ideologies and it's a case of "i dont think that word means what you think it means"

I know the terms don't match up, but that doesn't mean the person didn't display traits in line with what I have stated. It's like discussing the meaning of the word IS, when everyone knows exactly what is meant.
To add, you are telling me that Jonah Goldberg doesn't know what he is talking about?
I will say the title is a little over the top.

I believe I'm starting to understand both sides of this discussion. Correct me if I'm wrong but TTBF is looking at fascism as an ideology and SeaGriz is looking at some of the attributes of fascism such as intolerance and intimidation. While these attributes are not unique to fascism it has become a common to label those that use them "fascists".
