PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly

AP

WASHINGTON - The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.

"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."

Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.

Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."

Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

I felt so bad for that poor poor little fly. He wasn't hurting anyone. Just buzzing around looking for some crap to sit on. Wait, is that why he was on Obama?

Absolutely and I hope they keep it up because it erodes what little cred they do have.

They do with some because they have no problem with raising money and membership but they are polarizing so they have much opposition as well. The people in the middle are the ones that will look at this and most likely start moving away from their platform of lunacy.

If they keep on having naked women showing off their bodies in support, a select few will always give.

Well, "hippie douchebags" wasn't necessary, Henry. Show some class.

:shake:

Anyway, flies are germ-carrying fucks and they need to die.

Agree....have supported them in the past (just like AHS, local shelters, etc....I'm an animal homer), but refuse to send money to them because of this kind of crap and also using funds to lobby the local powers in Fishkill, NY to change the name of their town... :coffee:

Talked to a friend who works for PETA - there's a method behind this madness...

basically, every time they do this, they know people aren't with them, but it gets their name in the paper, and it gets people talking about their agenda.

and while it alienates some (who would likely never support them anyway) it's a way for them to brand themselves as THE animal rights group in the US... and in that capacity they have been successful.

i disagree with their methods, but a lot more people know PETA than their more moderate counterpart ASPCA.

Hey TTBF do you know what percentage of PETA members are Vegetarians? Or even a ballpark? I assume it's very high if not a mandate to be a member.

You needed to witness him swatting a housefly to know that he wasn't PERFECT??
