GOP senators challenge Sotomayor's commitment to Bill of Rights
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Republican senators on Wednesday made public their strategy for combating the Supreme Court nomination of appellate Judge Sonia Sotomayor, questioning whether she believes the Bill of Rights applies to all Americans.
In particular, a quartet of Republican senators told a news conference that Sotomayor has challenged whether the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right, which they said contrasts with what the Supreme Court ruled a year ago.
"Judge Sotomayor earlier this year rendered an opinion that held that the Second Amendment was not a fundamental right," noted Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee.
To Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Sotomayor's opinion amounts to a challenge of whether the Constitution still applies in the United States.
"It's a very important question that goes much beyond the question of bearing arms, but whether or not we still are a constitutional republic," he said.

They are fighting a losing battle on her. No chance she doesn't get confirmed.

I don't think they even consider winning this battle as their strategy...
If I may use a sports analogy, a baseball manager argues with an umpire on a call, not necessarily to win that fight, but to set him up for his next call..get him thinking...
Sotomayor will win approval...will the next nominee from Obama?????

I had thought about that, but as long as there are 60 Dems in the house, it is irrelevent, and vicously attacking her will help ensure a Democratic majority.
She needs to be FAIRLY grilled, as in a number of areas she is an unknown. Publically attacking her only helps the Dems

hoagies point is more of a "divide and conquer" variety. yes, we have 60 (or will when the MN SC finally rules) but what shouting like this does is put fear in to guys like Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Mark Pryor, Blanche Lincoln, the Udalls... the moderate Senators... I think it's an irrational fear... but it can work.
my hunch is the next SCOTUS fight (esp. if it's to fill one of the "conservative five" seats) is going to be a lot bloodier... plus, court fights are great for fundraising.

Yeah. Never mind that she's a racist and a sexist. We elected a communist as President, why stop there?
