Robert S. McNamara, the cerebral secretary of defense who was vilified for prosecuting the Vietnam War, then devoted himself to helping the world's poorest nations, died Monday. He was 93.
"In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam" appeared in 1995. McNamara disclosed that by 1967 he had deep misgivings about Vietnam — by then he had lost faith in America's capacity to prevail over a guerrilla insurgency that had driven the French from the same jungled countryside.
'We were terribly wrong'
"We of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations acted according to what we thought were the principles and traditions of our country. But we were wrong. We were terribly wrong," McNamara, then 78, told The Associated Press in an interview ahead of the book's release.

First plane I worked on in the Air FOrce in 1971 was the FB-111, sometimes refered to as "McNamara's Nightmare"...
RIP, Sir...

Like the fact that he did a mea culpa in his book, but many people hurl spears at him, and rightfully so, for not acting on his doubts and preventing tens of thousands of more American deaths and injuries.

There's an upside to every war... like all the VN expats in Falls Church who cut my hair and manicure my wife's nails.
