HAMILTON - The opportunity for hunters to harvest antlerless elk this year in the Bitterroot has dropped dramatically.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission accepted an emergency request to slash elk antlerless permits and quotas for the upcoming hunting season, following the recommendation of a Bitterroot Valley biologist and two local organizations.

That recommendation was made after the annual spring monitoring flights recorded the lowest ratio between cows and calves since 1963 when the flights originated.


“This is an attempt to get out ahead of the curve,” said Craig Jourdonnais, FWP's Bitterroot wildlife biologist. “We are attempting to protect the baby makers of the elk population.”

The decision will cut antlerless permits down to five in five Bitterroot hunting districts.

Nearly everyone on the working group believes there are too many wolves in the Bitterroot, Hedman said.

“Cats are going to pay a price for what wolves are doing to ungulates,” he said. “Hunters and bears are going to take a hit for wolves. � We've been told there are 15 wolf packs in the drainage. That's a lot of wolves.”

The first wolf hunting season in the state has been set for this fall. Western Montana hunters, including those in the Bitterroot, will be allowed to shoot 22 wolves. The statewide quota is 75.

“There will be an opportunity for people to hunt wolves this year, but the people that I've talked to who really know wolves say that you're not going to be able to shoot your way out of this,” Jourdonnais said.

Yes, because wolves weren't around for most of those 46 years.

The wolves will start eating themselves soon... after they get through eating the people out there.


Serious question though... I understand the thrill of hunting and all, but it's ok for you to shoot down and maintain a lower level of antlerless elk, but if some other animal comes along and starts tearing them apart, not cool? I know this goes way deeper than just wild animals as peoples livestock are at issue here too... but maybe I'm missing something with this argument here.

When hunting season is a huge cash cow for the state, and hunting season allows the state money for trail and camp ground maintience as well as a host of other things. What happens when those dollars quit rolling in? I'll tell ya, the woods will be nothing but a big fucking litter dump. SO FUCK ALL YOU ASSWIPES THAT THINK THIS IS GREAT. Well, that's a bet I'm willing to take considering in the previous eons, elk never were exterminated by the wolf when left to it's natural instincts.....when left for man to regulate, we have the wolf, bison, dodo, carrier, etc.......mother nature trumps all...

How much money has been spent on wolf extermination programs over the years? How much money does wildlife viewing bring into the state?

Interesting theory, given than in just a few short years of wolf reintroduction, they've knocked down the elk population to a 46 year low. 90% of a wolf's diet is elk and deer. They have no natural predators.

I did plan my trip out there....to watch the wolves in the Lamar Valley....
