COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford shed his fiscal conservatism on several taxpayer-funded international trips, including a South American jaunt that included time with his mistress, choosing expensive first-class or business-class seats while his aides sat in coach.
Sanford, who once criticized other state officials for costly travel, charged the state more than $37,600 for one first-class and four business-class flights overseas since November 2005, expense records show. Other state employees flew in the back of the plane at a fraction of the price, according to the documents.
The Republican governor, who balked at taking federal stimulus money after arguing it was an unwise use of taxpayer funds, charged the state $8,687 for a Delta Airlines trip to Brazil last year that included a leg in business class, state expense records show.

Amen. He clearly has no integrity the way he insults the citizens of South Carolina. Just another blackeye for this state.

No cover up, Jon. Every politician has skeletons in their closet. His mistake, like Palin, was to become a target of the liberal left.
Ever wonder why AP sent a team of investigative journalists up to Alaska to uncover dirt on Palin, then left them there AFTER the election was over? Sanford spoke out against Obama, and CAP/CREW unleashed their attack dogs on him. You, of all people, know the truth about character-assassination-as-political-policy, since it has been the practice of the GLBT hardcore activists for the past 20 years.
The only surprise about this is that Appa got suckered into taking the bait and posting this nonsense.

So....he didn't have an affair and charge the taxpayer's of SC for 1st class airline tickets while at the same time lecturing his political comrades in SC legislature about exorbitant travel expenditures?

Your hypocrisy knows no bounds TMan...I'm not happy about this as I liked Sanford for his stances...but, let's get serious, this has NOTHING to do with Palin and everything to do with hypocritical career politicians....I expect a little more from you TMan...

I don't know if business class travel is typical for governors or not but Sanford has always made a big deal out of being cost conscious. I am truly disappointed in one of the few politicians for whom I held esteem.

My beef is the guy just LEFT the state and no one knew where to find him, not even his staffers.
Dude, you are in charge of a state, you don't just UP AND LEAVE AND DON'T TELL ANYONE!!
And then he got all *emotional* and wouldn't shut up there for a while...dude, this isn't a high school crush we're talking here.
I feel bad for his wife and kids, they don't deserve this.

As a few of us has said earlier, he would be nailed for how much his little excursions cost the taxpayers rather than the excursion itself.

I feel bad for the kids, not so much the wife. I think she will be fine, and didn't really care where he was in the first place if I am remembering correctly.
What this whole situation tells me, is that many of those with power and wealth, will put themselves above all others when it suits them. They don't give two sh!ts about anyone else but themselves.

Is this because:
a) they have been corrupted by power? or
b) egomaniacs are driven to seek power, they just hide their true selves in order to improve their opportunities?

Appa, this has everything to do with Sanford becoming a Dem character assassination target for speaking out against the Obama Admin. All over the country, poli's both Donk and Conk cheat on their spouses and sneak around in luxury on the taxpayer's dime, yet MSM turns a blind eye as that behavior is S.O.P. for politicians. How many times have politicians held press interviews discussing their personal lives/aspirations on government property? Yet, when Palin did it a Dem operative filed a formal ethics complaint against her. Same with Sanford. He is another conservative who dug his heels in and said he would allow his state to become subjugated by the Obama Admin socialist policies: Hence, he cannot blow his nose now without some Soros backed group (CREW) digging the used tissue out of the garbage to determine if it was "taxpayer" purchased kleenex used for personal benefit.
And the "infidelity issue" only seems to matter when the offender is a conservative; an offense apparently morally "justified" depending on party affiliation.

I completely agree with you, T. Fucking double standard is BS and it's the reason I'm a closet Conk. I'm cryin' a river for you and your boys, T, believe me. Poor lowly trampled upon Conks.

Mark Sanford's fiscal child abuse
Remember Ty'Sheoma Bethea, the Dillon, S.C., girl who asked Congress for stimulus funds to rehab her dilapidated middle school? I thought she was an inspiration for America; wingnuts at the Washington Times thought she was "irresponsible" for asking government to solve her problems.
Now her governor, Mark Sanford, has taken that line of thinking one step further: He told Fox's great poet Glenn Beck that taking stimulus funds to fix schools like Bethea's would be "fiscal child abuse," while rejecting the funds helps kids. No, I'm not kidding.

Last of the True Believers?
By risking his popularity now, Mark Sanford may be quite popular in 2012.

Dr. No: Sanford wants less stimulus for his state, to the consternation of many voters
There's a cool rain falling on the South Carolina State House, but it's nothing compared to the storm inside. The date is April 2, 44 days since President Obama signed his stimulus package into law and 24 hours, or so everyone believes, before the nation's governors can no longer claim their full share of the funds—something the Palmetto State has yet to do. Frustrated legislators mill and murmur in the lobby, awaiting the bell that will call them to their chambers for yet another round of anguished debate. Protesters, mostly teachers, wave handmade signs outside the entrance. On the lower level, a receptionist lifts her endlessly ringing phone from its receiver and repeats a single phrase—"The governor's office, hold please"—again and again (and again). Meanwhile, the man himself, Gov. Mark Sanford, sits behind a closed door 30 feet away, pausing in the midst of the crisis to "visit," as he puts it, with a reporter from a national newsmagazine. And he is starting to cry.

SC Attorney General Initiates Investigation into Gov. Sanford – Last Friday, CREW Asked AG to Look into Governor’s Activities
Submitted by pbjork on 1 July 2009 - 1:49pm. Mark Sanford
CREW was pleased to learn South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster has initiated an investigation into Gov. Mark Sanford's (R-SC) affair. Last Friday, we called on the AG and the South Carolina State Ethics Commission to investigate whether Sanford violated the state constitution and broke state law by misleading his staff regarding his whereabouts, leaving the state leaderless, and misusing state funds to conduct the affair.
(CREW is a Soro's funded [$100,000 Open Society Institute annual grant] Dem witchunt organization and part of his "Shadow Party", whose sole purpose is to dig up dirt and either force out of office or make life hell for Republicans. Founded by current Obama Administration Special Counsel to the President on Ethics and Government Reform Norman Eisen [who was also one of the Obama campaign's largest contributors], Louis Mayberg a wealthy Democrat contributor, and Mark Penn, CEO of political strategy/marketing firm Burson-Marsteller, Hillary Clinton's campaign Strategist
and long time Dem political operative. They hired former Democrat House Minority Counsel Melanie Sloan to run CREW, and one of her first targets was Tom DeLay: The formal House Ethics complaint against DeLay was filed by fellow Texas Democrat Rep. Chris Bell [who was a reapportionment lame-duck resulting DeLay's influence in eliminating Bell's "Dem" district...hence his motive], using the "evidence" gathered by Melanie Sloan and the CREW investigators).
Keep pulling rationalization out of thin air, Jon. The truth cannot be concealed.

TMan, I'm not disputing your analysis on why or how he got busted, I'm just not ready to excuse his behavior because of it....he chose to cheat on his wife, he chose to lie to his staff about it...he!!, he chose to not tell his staff where he was thereby creating the excuse to delve into his whereabouts by the press...how fokking stoopid...at least his poor decision-making abilities were outed over a trivial extra-marital affair and not something improtant like public policy....heck, it's about like having
me run for public office....if you're going to charge the windmill of status quo, you better make sure your house is in order....let's not excuse poor-decision m,aking and socio-pathic behavior by any politician regardless of their affiliation...
