Homophobia, book burning alive and well in WI

Why Do Some Folks in Wisconsin Want to Publicly Burn This Book?

babybebop

What makes the book Baby Be-Bop so special? Published in 1997, Baby Be-Bop is part of young adult writer Francesca Lia Block's "Weetzie Bat" series and focuses on Weetzie's best friend Dirk; the story is "a very sweet, simple, coming-of-age story about a young man's discovery that he's gay." It also happens to be a title that a crazypants conservative organization in Wisconsin not only wants yanked from public libraries, but burned at the stake. Yes, really.

In the book, "Dirk is beaten by gay bashers but steadfastly clings to the possibility of finding love," notes Salon. To a group calling themselves the West Bend Citizens for Safe Libraries, that's enough to poison the minds of children! That's why they wanted Baby and other gay-oriented books pulled from a list of suggested gay and lesbian titles; then they wanted the books removed from the youth section and placed in the adults aisle.

And then came the Christian Civil Liberties Union. Not satisfied with the library's decision (they opted not to make any of the requested changes), the CCLU is suing the library for, among other things, "damaging" the "mental and emotional well-being" of library patrons. What's their claim? Using a backdoor approach, CCLU insists the appearance of the word "nigger" in the book makes the book racist. Retorts Block: "Obviously I use those words, including 'faggot,' which is also in the book, to expose racism and homophobia, not promote it."

If they get their way, the CCLU won't just have the library's only copy of the book removed from shelves, but "publicly burned." Hey, maybe we can use Glenn Beck's book as kindling?

"Christian" has become a dirty word thanks to the antics of the whacko elements, and thanks in no small part to those who stand by and do nothing as their crazy associates continue to re-define Christianity for them.

We really can go no further as a society with all the midieval superstition still running amok. Would be funny if it weren't sofa king destructive.

Exactly, Wedgie.

I would like to see some CHRISTIAN groups stand up to these wackos.

But 99% won't.

What about the Log Cabin conks? Does their agenda fight any of this type of thing or just ignore it and hope it goes away?

They just hope these "embarassing incidents" go away

i like how a "christian" group is proposing dispatching of an "evil" book by burning it on an altar like a bunch of pagans...

btw, tip to the nutsy-fagan crowd out there... if you want people to embrace your side, you're halfway there with the deceptively named organization that fights against what it professes to advocate for... however you'll almost always lose most Americans when you advocate burning books... something about a nation founded on enlightenment ideals reeeeealy doesn't like that...

yeesh, these people give "Christian" a very bad name.

I just watched an HBO documentary on 1st Amendment speech that was very enlightening and sad. Features no commentary by the maker, just the viewpoints on different 1st amendment issues by both Conks, Donks and Indy's.

Its called Shouting Fire: Stories from the Edge of Free Speech. It was one of the best things on TV that I've ever seen.

Everyone should watch it. Here's the trailer:

So true buddy
Eventually every religion becomes defined culturally by it's radical leading edge proponents...
and so - Christianity in American culture is now more defined by the nut-balls and crazy bastards than by the friendly little church in the valley of peace...

And this "take over" by the Nut-balls can only happen if it is supported by silence and no corrective action - Christianity (as a movement) has only itself to blame for this

Guys, I said this here a couple months ago, but there is a coming Christian jihad as they become more and more marginalized. They're going to lash out in a wave of Jesus-inspired violence against the nation they see slipping to Hell. Gays, Muslims, working women, non-believers, Democrats, minorities - look out.

Get ready for the Holy War.

Worse, they're going to have the overt backing of wide-reaching talking heads like Limborg, et al.

I'll pop any Jesus freak who accosts me on a street corner, the fvcks.

Acting like pagans, means they aren't acting like Christians. :shake:

This is what has become of Christianity. :thumb: What good "Christian" can ever associate him or herself with this? Burning a book is like burning a piece of my heart. :shake:

Don't have a problem with the premise of the book itself. If little Winky or whatever his name is wants to be a fag, then have at it. Be sure to lubricate.

That being said, I wouldn't consider some fag getting beat up by a bunch of queer bashers to be appropriate for what is supposed to be a children's book. It is hard enough to explain the Daddy putting his pee pee in Mommy's pee pee without having to explain Daddy putting his pee pee in the pool boy's poo poo.

As with every deep, dark, medieval Conk, CID is focused on the sex act and ignoring the possibility that there just may be something called love between two men or two women.

Back in your hole, Conkie.

wants = you are acting like if Gay is a choice. Do we have to talk about this again?

lubricate = like straight folks are the exception to the rule. Double eyeroll!

Aids does not discriminate! This is 2009, not 1969 where hating anyone that is not a straight while male IS acceptable. :D

All you knee jerky little girls need to read for a change.

I said I don't have a problem with fags, queers, homos, KY cowboys, fudge packers, pillow biters or anything else like that. My own brother is a fag and I love him like, well, a brotha. I also reserve the right to say the word fag and pillow biter and every other offensive homophobic joke I can think of, because every now and then I can coax Cap'n Cat off of his hairy 50 year old sugar daddy and bait him at his own game.

That being said, when it comes to my very young daughter (or son who might well be on the way....woo hoo) I don't want her learning jack sh!t about ANYTHING sexual before she is old enough. (Her mom says that is about age 8. I am more in favor of age 28, but I digress.) If Twinky wants some hot man secks then I say throw in one or two grunts for me. I just have a problem with explaining ANYTHING sexual to my kids until they are ready, and that goes for straight sex, faggot sex, sex with animals, and Cap'n Cat's favorite, sex with yourself.

And now I'm going back in Cap'n Cat's HOLE.
