ATLANTA -- An Atlanta family is upset they have lost their beloved pet after their dog was shot in a moment of confusion after a security system false alarm.

The Atlanta Police Department has opened up an investigation -- what they call a "firearms review" -- after a local family said their dog was shot by an officer in their own backyard.

Elizabeth Feichter has her dog Molly to play with but not her other dog, Cierra. Cierra was a rescued lab mix and a family pet for six years until she was killed Saturday.

“She was barking because she’s a dog and she barks. But he shot her and killed her instantly,” said Feichter.

Saturday, the Kirkwood home’s alarm went off. A police officer talked with the house-sitter, who was at the home at the time. Then, the officer checked out the fenced backyard.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Linda Stouffer located the police report and the officer described the incident by saying, “The dogs were running at full speed. The first dog had its head down, tail down, and showing its teeth. I fired two shots.”

“She’s a family pet and she was just protecting the house. She didn’t know what was going on and the alarm was going off,” said Feichter.

If I was him I'd use the "I thought it was a rabid wolf" defense...
Which has been known to work in the states of Montana and Wyoming

Know your case history and legal precedence kids...

hmmm...."fenced backyard".

A dog is running at you after you entered a fenced backyard. Why not just turn around and leave the fenced backyard where the dogs would be contained?

I don't know if he should get fired, but he defintely needs to some community policing and firearm use training.

Was he fearful of his life from a "lab mix"?

Contrary to one's quips about wolf dogs, I want to make a point here. We at WB central consider our family dogs as....family.

I had one miscreant tell me four times he would like to shoot my big Drahthaar, just because he thinks he's ugly. That fourth time did it, and the neighborhood still talks about the big fight.

Being ten years younger and twenty pounds heaver than me proved to be no advantage at all. :coffee:

I would be livid if anyone hurt my dog. She's like a child to me and probably one of my best friends. She's always there on a bad day and never judges. When I come home after a long day she's always rushing up to give me kisses and be petted. Had it been my dog that was shot I'd do everything in my power to make sure he regretted it every day.

Not yet, but there will no doubt come a day when I'm Jager Bomb and one bong hit from performing canilingus on a hot yellow lab bitch.

Is the dogs vagina the same as the "moment of confusion" the dog was shot in?

He should be. If his judgment is that bad he shouldn't be a cop.

I worked outdoors as a land surveyor for many years and quite frequently I would be confronted by agressive barking dogs protecting their turf. I managed to get along without ever getting biten and I never had to hurt a dog (I stood my ground while trying to appear non-threatening, it always worked). The cop is a jackass.

Agree...surveyed as well and had similar experiences...have never had to harm a dog....though was confronted by people with guns...

 To all those concerned: This was my sister's dog that was killed, and we are asking that people voice their opinion on this case by writting in to the ATL gov't. Nothing will ever be done about this or to prevent this from happening again if we don't speak up! City Councilwoman Natalyn M. Archibong has done some investigation on this case already and you can reach her at narchibong@atlantaga.gov AND CC the mayor mayorfranklin@atlantaga.gov The officer's name is LH Wagaman. Thanks for your help!!!

It's a family pet. I'm sure they will get another dog, but it doesn't excuse what happened to this one.
