Do you force your political views on your kids or do you present a balanced picture to them to make their own calls?

Both our boys (12 and 8.5) think George W. Bush sucks and I know they picked that up from their mom, who complained about him a little too loudly at times. On fishing trips, the boys would ask me why Bush was a "bad" president and, in order to teach them a little about critical thinking and looking at both sides of an issue, I found myself actually defending Dubya on some things, for their sake. Didn't want them to "hate" any public figure and carry that hatred into their teens and adulthood, such as must have happened with people like T and Z and Hoagie and native and wildkyle, etc.

Same with religion. My youngest is an atheist, he says, and his older brother wants to be a Roman Catholic. We've run them through the pros and cons of belief and non-belief and were respectful to any side of the story.

So, what about you? Are your kids Conks like you and are they goosestepping to the Michigan Militia-McVeigh-Reagan-Rove beat like CSUBUCDAD's kids? Or, are they already wearing buckskin jackets, growing a beard, flying a rainbow flag and driving nails into lodgepole pines in Oregon's forests?

My kids look at me like dumb dogs.....

For the record...my son is much more conservative than I am, and the daughter is a bit more liberal than I am...

Your kids are going to pick up things from you whether you like it or not, they are like sponges...yeah, a lot like sponges.

When the kids did not want to go to Sunday school anymore, I took 'em fishing instead. When they brought home what we considered to be propaganda from school, we discussed the issue with them. They were not sheltered from death, it was all around their childhood and we let them hang out with us when mourning.

The only thing that I, asshat Wedgebuster insisted upon other than their chores, was that they have an activity after school every day. No activity, then you work after school. Where will I work, they asked, not to worry says I, I can invent work for you every single day. They chose the activities route.

My kids must have had the greatest parents in the whole wide world, because that's how they have turned out.

I know that sounds like bragging, but it must be true, we hear it all the time.

I think kids are smart enough as they develop to figure out if I filled their grey matter with crap or good stuff...

I went to SS and church, I had belonged to since age 2 weeks, up until we moved to TX when my kids were 3 & 5. We went for a few years but after 3 or 4 yrs I found the church communtiy around here somewhat lacking and self important rather than fulfilling. After that I let the kids decide what they wanted to do. My son (32) is agnostic. My daughter (30) has just refound religion but attends a non-denom church. My SIL was brought up Catholic and is having none of it. I am not quite sure what he is. Though she is Methodist, by traditon, they married in a non-denom church (On UT campus of all places ) (Not the same one she now attends)

Naturally they heard my husband's and my political views while growing up but we never willingly forced those or our opinions and stances on them. They're both pretty intelligent and have formed their own ideas and leanings. Though somewhat similar to ours I think my daughter is even more liberal minded than us and the son's views he keeps to himself. Although I do suspect he's closer to my leanings than he is willing to admit.

just a hunch, but my kids will likely rebel by being conks for awhile...

might throw em out of the house for it too... tell em to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" however, i will teach em to think for themselves, but provide them with the values that make only one side of the political equation possible.

I had a long post all written out and I lost the satellite. I ain't retyping it. Long post short..... I tell them what they ask, only when they ask, with only facts easily verifiable. I remain as neutral as possible.

Sounds 'bout like you're the only azzhole parent on here, Hoagenmeister.

No kids yet, and no real plan on how to raise them yet. But, I'd like to think we'll be open with them, teach them as best we can right from wrong, and most importantly to live and let live--being judgmental helps no one.

My advice..

Politics is not a major subject, but when it comes up the only thing i tell them is to not to decide their politics on with a gut emotional reaction. Realize that there are many different ramifications to what might otherwise seem a simple issue, read all you can and then decide for yourself.

Maybe this is wrong but I don't give my opinion on politics unless they ask me.

My son is 10 and we talk about religion, politics, etc only when he asks.

He attends a Catholic school, for the education more so than the religious aspect of it. He will never attend a public school as long as I have any say in it, they suck and are more into indoctrination than education.

My son has chores and for the last few years we have been studying the US Constitution. That is the only thing I will push on him, he is going to know more about that document than any other person in his class including the teacher. We read it together, he asks questions and I answer them as unbiased as I can.

I provide motorcycles, guns, camping, fishing, boating, and the opportunity to play whatever sport he chooses, I dont push anything on him.

He seems sharp, so I am certain he will grow up conservative and dominate the world like Cheney did.
