Poll: Obama mishandled comments on race

WASHINGTON – Americans are more likely to disapprove than approve of how President Barack Obama dealt with the racially tinged dispute between a white Cambridge, Mass., police officer and a well-known black Harvard scholar — with disapproval especially strong among white voters, according to a poll released Thursday.

The July 16 arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr. for disorderly conduct in his own home sparked a national debate over racial profiling and police conduct. The controversy intensified after Obama last Wednesday said police "acted stupidly" when they arrested Gates, who is a friend of his.

The poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that 41 percent disapproved of Obama's handling of the Gates arrest, compared with 29 percent who approved. The poll also found the incident and Obama's reaction saturated the public consciousness. As many as 80 percent of Americans said they are now aware of Obama's comments on the matter.

The president's approval ratings fell, especially among working class whites, as the focus of the Gates story shifted from details about the incident to Obama's remarks, the poll said. Among whites in general, more disapprove than approve of his comments by a two-to-one margin.

He fucked up. Shouldn't have commented on it until he had all the facts.

You're right, Jon, and others.

But, let's look at something. The motherfvcker manned up to it the next goddamned day and is doing some diplomacy over it, bringing people together to discuss it.

Took that fvck, Dubya, five years to own up that "mistakes were made" in the Iraq thing.

I'll take a prez like that any day.

As always, you can lick my wrinkled grommet if you don't agree with me.

If more of this country's problems were solved while sitting down for a beer or two, we'd be in much better shape, IMO. Instead America goes to church to ask a imaginative diety to solve our problems. Which one sounds logical?
Remember, God told Bush we should invade Iraq.

But, yeah, Obama shouldn't have said anything in the first place without knowing all the facts. But who here hasn't done that? Shit, I do it about 50 times a day.

But according to Z, , calling the guy and apologizing to him personally isn't as good as calling a press conference and making a publicity stunt out of it.

Obama called the cop out in front of a national audience. He should apologize likewise.(Or at least acknowledge the mistake)

If we want racism to go away we need to stop talking about it and making race the center of our focus.

People need to stop focusing on what color the cop and professor are, why should that matter?

What should matter in this country is what people do, how people act, and what they stand for. Not the color of their skin.

I agree with you about what should matter. Unfortunately it often doesn't work that way. I think we have to talk about race at least to the extent that we acknowledge that racism is still an issue that we need to work through and past.

Yes, we do need to acknowledge it is still and issue, however, in my opinion racism is made worse by focusing on race.

Did anyone catch what kind of beer they are going to have at the Beer Summit? I think Obama prefers Bud Light, and one of the other two asked for Blue Moon.

I always saw Obama as more of a Colt 45 or Steel Reserve 211 guy

It can be if the focus is always from the aspect of us and them.

I also saw that some idiot in Congress was po'd that they aren't drinking Sam Adams since it's the only true American beer of the bunch and they all have Mass ties.

This whole thing is overblown - everybody will kiss and make up and go about their business, not solving anything outside the room. Maybe Obama will start mediating some couples counseling now or a UAW grievance. :shake:

I drank Red Stripe when we went to Jamaica. It tastes like water.

Blue Moon is pretty fancy for a Cambridge cop!

Bet I bought a dozen cases of red stripe last summer, it was 19.00 a case at costco. It is a great lager with a touch of ginger in it, and the buzz-o-meter is pretty good.

Blue Moon is a Molson product, so Molson/Coors now days. Has a girly finish associated with any Belgian white, but has a hell of a kick, a pretty high alcohol content I believe. Certainly not a macho man brew.

Bud light is piss water. Usually drank by those who cant handle a real beer, and usually served nearly frozen so as to deaden the taste buds for its trip across the tongue.

I vote Gates has the best brew going here. :thumb:
