Pump prices had minor impact on car market
Data show last year's gas spike had a marginal effect on buyer habits

What looked like a permanent divorce, triggered by $4-a-gallon gas, has proved to be just a temporary lovers' quarrel between Americans and their light trucks.

According to new industry data, last year's fuel price spike had only a marginal impact on the U.S. car market. After an initial, knee-jerk response toward smaller cars, most motorists went back to buying what they would have if prices hadn’t risen at all — including pickups, SUVs and other light trucks.

“Everyone reported on the rapid escalation of small-car demand, but the rapid descent of small-car market share went somewhat unnoticed,” says Jeff Anderson, head of consulting and analytics for Experian Automotive, a consulting firm.

Fvck it, guys. The Conks win. We are addicted to gasoline and consumerism, just as they would have it.

I'm ashamed to be an American right now.

Scroll down to the last few paragraphs of the article. I predict we're going to make "cash for clunkers" permanent, thereby saving a place for more energy-efficient cars and trucks on the taxpayers' dime. The "free lunch" philosophy is a far more dangerous American habit than driving big pickups or SUVs. Witness ObamaCare, the prescription drug "entitlement," the earmark-packed "stimulus" bill, etc. :shake:

Cash for Clunkers is great! I can trade in my 2004 Chevy 1500 V-8 that gets 14mpg for a 2010 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid that gets 18mpg. What a friggin country.

There are places where it is a necessity to own a four wheel drive truck or SUV, and I live in one. I have always had a dependable truck to get around in during the winter months, and for the recreational purposes that were instrumental to the decision to make our home here, is is a way of life.

Never could figure why some folks own nothing but these big hogs, and I know people like that. One thing I do is limit the amount of use on the truck to what is pretty much necessary. We use the '98 camry for most driving, and my last run to Denver I averaged 40 mpg on the way down, no shit.

Tundra does 18 - 20 if not pulling a load or running down the interstate at 80 mph.

Uh, in case nobody ever really thunk of it----------if you know how to negotiate the purchase of a new automobile------------you can get an awfully big discount by insisting upon it---------------on some models nearly as much as they are paying for your "clunker"------------------------and you could keep the clunker and pay the same as your neighbor who traded his in on the same vehicle.

I like how all of you have NO PROBLEM with our government telling us what kind of vehicles we can buy and the fact they place mileage standards on US companies.

These fu*kheads need to get out of our business and let this country do its own thing.

This isnt about the environment or saving it its about a certain group of people (Dumocraps) envious of corporations making money and they tax the fu*k out of them set up regulations and force unions on them and then make them the bad guys for taking off to make money somewhere else.

Fu*k each and every one of you that thinks our federal government should be involved in any of our businesses or corporations.

Its tough to say but McVeigh was right................

We need government for military and infrastructure.

They are as fu*king worthless as you are, when it comes to the rest of the so called services they provide.

Didn't have to sneak off base. Psilocybin mushrooms grew within 100 yards of our barracks.
And, btw, I was the best 68D in the United States Army. Couldn't have done it without the shrooms.

But thanks for sticking up for SNOTNOSEDGRIZ1, he can use the help.

We certainly agree about that, native. Unfortunately all the jobs that actually produce something were sent abroad, leaving us the obscenely compensated parasites who produce nothing. Why couldn't we have kept the manufacturing jobs here and sent the bankers overseas?

Although I'll concede the point about lost manufacturing jobs, I think manufacturing is only one component of a healthy economy.

Nonetheless, responsibility for the lost manufacturing jobs can be DIRECTLY laid at the feet of big LABOR and big GOVERNMENT, and throw in a little inept MANAGEMENT. But the lack of initiative and clay feet of management can be attributed to big government and big labor.

...Which begs Cleets2's point in another thread about needing 20 years of research into energy alternatives. I agree with Cleets, we need it and should have been investing in the research, BUT while exploiting carbon-based U.S. resources like coal and oil shale to the hilt. Shame on both Dems and Repubs for failing to make the grand political bargain which would have allowed us to have our cake and eat it, too!
