You can feel the incredulity in the headline alone...yet, no laws were ever broken...
A man toting an assault rifle was among a dozen protesters carrying weapons while demonstrating outside President Barack Obama's speech to veterans on Monday, but no laws were broken. It was the second instance in recent days in which unconcealed weapons have appeared near presidential events.

A man is shown legally carrying a rifle at a protest against President Obama on Monday in Phoenix, Arizona.

Video from the protest in Phoenix, Arizona, shows the man standing with other protesters, with the rifle slung over his right shoulder.

Phoenix police said authorities monitored about a dozen people carrying weapons while peacefully demonstrating.

"It was a group interested in exercising the right to bear arms," said police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill.

Honest question - why does that guy need an assault rifle? I get the use of firearms for sport and collecting, etc. But an assault rifle is built for one thing only right? Killing humans?

I have a pretty good background with firearms. I grew up in a rural area (relatively speaking of course). My family owns plenty of rifles, shotguns and pistols used for hunting and target shooting. I just don't get the need to own an assault rifle.

How many crosshairs of the Secret Service were on that guy's melon?

Intimidation mainly. Interestingly, when the "assault weapons" ban laws were in effect, it only applied to these military looking assault rifles. There are makes that shoot the same ammunition, have detachable box magazines just like the military versions, but don't employ the pistol grip, space age black plastic stocks, flash hiders, or tool rail down the top of the receiver.

Sporting arms are much more dependable and functional, most folks that opt for the AR-15 type rifles are thinking either that they will intimidate, or that spraying a bunch of rounds all over the place is more effective than putting one right where it counts.

This fricking country has just gone bonkers in the last couple months.

After a quick study of this image.....I wonder if the intent was to intimidate Obama's detractors, and not his supporters. Could be wrong of course, but I'm just saying.

Judging from history, the best bet is a left-wing radical.

Oswald, Booth, Sirhan Sirhan, Czolgosz (McKinley)

Garfield's assissin was right-wing radical

In the article is says he was carrying the rifle and handgun, outside the event. Looks like a demonstration near the event as opposed to headline implying it was at the Obama event.

It was a group interested in exercising the right to bear arms," police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said.

U.S. Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan acknowledged the incidents in New Hampshire and Arizona, but said he was not aware of any other recent events where protesters attended with open weapons. He said there was no indication that anyone had organized the incidents.

Asked whether the individuals carrying weapons jeopardized the safety of the president, Donovan said, "Of course not."

The individuals would never have gotten in close proximity to the president, regardless of any state laws on openly carrying weapons, he said. A venue is considered a federal site when the Secret Service is protecting the president and weapons are not allowed on a federal site, he added.

What you haven't heard? Us people who live in hunting areas use those assault style weapons for big game hunting. Really, you have to pay better attention.

Intimidation or not. That is stupid on all levels. If someone has a gun, I will exit everytime. I refuse to get caught in the crossfire knowing that I'm not the intended target. What a d-bag. :shake:

Why would I kill Obama? I hope he does well. I might not support what he does all the time, but if he succeeds the country succeeds.

Good post Wedge. One thing to add. Dane, you must not be all that familiar with guns and have resorted to using the media's buzz words. Assault weapons are either full auto or have a selector switch to go from semi to full. Hell, if you wish to call them that, shotguns and pistols could be considered assault weapons because they are used when SWAT teams move on a target.
Exactly, which is why the "Assault Weapons Ban" was nothing more than show....it took "evil" looking weapons off the streets, but effected none of the intended change the law's backers' associated with their feel-good legislation....

It may be a constitutional right, but I shouldn't have to "potentially" die because of it either. Their are no wars going on in this country, what's the need for it. I don't trust people enough to have sound judgment when using a weapon of death, that also goes for police, military, and the such. Just because they're trained doesn't mean their mind is in the right place. Most people carry weapons with the intent to kill. I'm not dieing because it's his or anyone else's constitutional right to have one, thank you. I will choose life everytime. :coffee:

Really? So my intent when carrying a weapon (like my Spyderco knife) is to kill? That's odd...I better get to work....btw, you are much more likely to get killed driving a car than shot by someone carrying a gun...and driving a car is not a constitutionally protected right....believe me, I know.... :?

That makes sense because the majority of adults have cars instead of guns, like myself. :thumb:

Totally, dude. You exercise your Constitutional, nay, God-given right to carry your arsenal with you to protest outside of a presidential speech on a topic completely unrelated to firearms, and some goddamn little chickenshit cocksucker gets all pissy about it. What a bunch of fuckin' crybabies, huh? Fuck 'em if they can't take a little bit of blatant intimidation.
