WASHINGTON (AFP) –
Former US homeland security chief Tom Ridge charges in a new book that top aides to then-president George W. Bush pressured him to raise the "terror alert" level on the eve of the November 2004 US election.
Then defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and attorney general John Ashcroft pushed him to elevate the color-coded threat level, but Ridge refused, according to a summary from his publisher, Thomas Dunne Books.

Why didn't McCain select Ridge as his running mate?

for the same reason he didn't take pawlenty - not enough "wow" factor... frankly - I think he should have taken him and pound "experience" he might not have won, but he would have shown better than picking HockeyMilf...

First Scotty, now Tommy. Something tells me this won't be the last person to come out and shed light on the ruse that George "David Blaine" Bush was doing.

I'm not expert but IMO his best chance at winning was to pick a running mate who would appeal to moderates/independents and hope that the base came out in droves to vote for him out of loyalty/fear of Obama. Overall experience probably wasn't as important for the VP as stability and an even-tempered personality although experience as an executive (i.e. Senator/Governor combo would be better able to handle the demands of the oval office than a Senator/Senator combo) could have been promoted.
Mark's right, we'll be seeing more of these.

History books are stuffed with examples of this leadership style... I mean it's as old as it gets
(The old tricks are the best trick I guess)

Kind of reminds me of Dem hysteria regarding opposition to ObamaCare. The universal trait of all politicians seems to be that they are prone to be hypocrites and fearmongerers.

McCain wanted Ridge, but the establishment said NO....because he's pro-choice.
