Pelosi: ‘No Way’ Health Plan Can Pass Without Public Option

Aug. 21 (Bloomberg) --
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said legislation to revamp the U.S. health-care system won’t get through her chamber unless it creates a government-run insurance program to compete with the private industry.
“There’s no way I can pass a bill in the House of Representatives without a public option,” the California Democrat said at a press conference in San Francisco yesterday.
Pelosi drew a line in the sand on one of the most contentious issues surrounding the health-care overhaulafter Obama administration officials earlier suggested the White House might be willing to back away from the public option to win broader support.

Guess we'll have to see who's line in the sand is bigger - Pelosi or Obama.

I don't want immediate healthcare reform, but would be almost willing to swallow it without public option just for Pelosi to get her comeuppance.....

I'm not in Pelosi's fan club either, and agree with you. We need healthcare reform, but these idiots need to understand that getting something done quickly < getting something done right. I'd rather they take the time to think it through and present a comprehensive plan to the public instead of ramrodding a half thought out plan so they can meet some arbitrary August deadline. IMO, that's where a lot of the town hall rage has come from.

Another example of Obama seeing the light and trying to work things out, while Pelosi etal are telling everyone else to let them eat cake.

Disagree with the assessments here. Obama was voted in to push for the public option.
Pelosi, etc, are just trying to make him live up to ONE campaign promise (I know, it would be the first).

Nope. Only about a third of Barry's supporters were dedicated lefties who purposely voted for socialist healthcare. The rest were either naive, non-policy excitement junkies or fools who thought the fraudster would govern as a moderate.

Quickly or slowly, it's all bull$h!t until people realize that you can't have something for nothing and are willing to pay at least a portion of the cost themselves.

Disagree Jon. Obama was voted in for a variety of reasons by voters from a variety of backgrounds. Many of his supporters would not be opposed to a public option that was properly vetted and implemented but will not support something that is rushed through and that might fvck up the insurance that they already have. Healthcare insurance is too important and the impact too far reaching to rush to a solution.
I'm not some angry white man who is disrupting town hall meetings and fighting to hoard what I have. Healthcare is a major issue that needs to be addressed for the long term health of this country and I will support a rational, even-handed approach to resolving the issue. I won't support Pelosi's partisan, our way or the highway, we know what's best for you and we're going to ram it down your throats BS the same way that I didn't support GWB doing the same thing. Pelosi needs to look in the mirror for she has become the very thing that she was so critical of.

I don't disagree with you in principle, but I think we all know it will come in some form during this administration like it or not. If we're going to have to subsidize this program, I'd argue they should at least troubleshoot it a bit to get the bugs out (although the government has rarely been accused of something so logical).

The Republicans and blue dogs would be wise to come up with an alternative that included tort reform, effective physician licensure reform, empowerment of individuals (tax deductions, insurance portability, non-cancellation if the insurance subscriber has paid their bills on time), market-based cost control mechanisms, taxation of employers of illegal aliens for the unpaid social benefits, etc...
...and I disagree that we will have (more) socialist healthcare, like it or not. The true believers are only about 20% of the voting public, at most.

Exactly wrong.
A public option, if anything at all, should provide the minimum necessary for survival, not a subsidy of life style.

Right on, native, about the constructive alternative!
If Pelosi thinks she has the votes, she should put her dentures where her mouth is and ram it through.
Whoops...her dentures are already in her mouth. But you get my point!

How soon we forget...
A huge number of voters would have voted for Donald Duck in that election - as Palin and McCain were a complete disaster

True.
However, there were a couple tickets other than Dem or Rep that looked better, and that's sad.

You left out one key reason some people pressed the level for Obama...it was an anti-GOP vote, not a pro-Obama vote...
Those are the people who are today really wishing they had a different choice that fateful day last November...

Yup, you could have run an alien muslim named Hussein in this election and won, that's the extent of the Bush and company historical pilfering of our country and butchery of our volunteers. Yet there are plenty of those who benefited from Bush's criminal acts, so they have to continue to be marginalized by the acts of super-tards at these Fox News instigated shouting matches much like so many little Sean Hannity clones.

But back to that shameless beyotch Pelosi. How many taxpayer dollars are subsidizing that cheap-assed family vineyard worth $5MM-$25MM (that produces schitty cabernet sobegon) where she's hosting the glitzy fundraiser this weekend? BEGONE, DENTURE WOMAN!!
