GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A 10-year-old girl was sent home on her first day back to school in Gainesville for wearing a shirt that was deemed offensive.

Faith Sapp wore a shirt to class Monday with the words 'Islam Is Of The Devil' printed on it. The words are the same of those at an outreach center where her father serves as the pastor.

What if she wore a shirt that was extremely pro-Islam. Would she have been sent home then as well?

If so, are kids no longer allowed to be political in school?

If not, why is it ok to be pro-Islam, but not anti-Islam.

The only thing I object to is that if a kid has a "piss Jesus" shirt on and was sent home the ACLU would have a conniption fit.

First, good job, school district.

Second, clenz, the kids are there to learn, not be political billboards, you dork. The girl is a victim of her hillbilly trailer fvck parents who just want to push buttons so they have something to laugh about over warm Busch Light at the next regional NRA klan klatch. Start seeing through this shit, youngster.

If they kids aren't there to be political, which I agree with, why don't the schools send kids home that wear Obama shirts?

They don't want them spreading HATE, clenz. An Obama shirt isn't hateful, the shirt she was wearing was. Is it really that hard to see the difference?

The problem is that the shirt was intentionally inflammatory. An Obama shirt can be a show of support without being intentionally inflammatory. As long as the school would also send home kids with 'Christianity Is Of The Devil', 'Judaism Is Of The Devil', etc. tee shirts they're being consistent in their approach and I don't have a problem with it. An 'Obama Rocks' shirt should be ok while a 'McCain Sucks' shirt shouldn't.

Understood, however, if kids are not to be political in school (which I would agree with) why should they be allowed to wear an Obama, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, or whomever shirt? A kid from my old high school was suspended for 2 weeks last November post election for having an article hang on his locker that wasn't pro-Obama for the reason of bringing politics into the school...BUT....there were 37 lockers in that same hall way that had pro-Obama stuff plastered all over them that nothing was said about.

they aren't "not allowed to be political"

they aren't allowed to wear inflammatory clothing. advocating FOR a candidate is one thing... advocating AGAINST something is another matter entirely.

I believe that schools have quite a bit of leeway when it comes to "suppressing" freedom of speech.

I would need more details about the situation the clenz describes before I could really comment on it. The content of the article that wasn't pro-Obama is important to understand. If it was critical of the incoming administration based on concerns about higher taxes, bigger government, etc. I wouldn't have a problem with it but if it was filled with crap about him being a black, muslim terrorist I would be concerned. A suspension seems pretty extreme.

Islam isn't politics. It is religion.
(yes, Islamic entities are often involved in politics, just like Catholic entities and Jewish entities and the like are. but it is not in itself political)
