Maybe, just maybe, this is the window of opportunity Creigh Deeds needs to get back into the Virginia governor's race.

Bob McDonnell, his Republican opponent, wrote in a graduate school thesis 20 years ago that Republicans must shield traditional, heterosexual two-parent families from the effects of abortion, feminism, welfare, "cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators."

The paper, first reported Sunday by The Washington Post, could shake up his race against Deeds, who trails McDonnell in statewide polling. In the past three weeks, Deeds has stressed McDonnell's close support for legislative curbs against abortion rights.

It also comes as McDonnell sought to brush aside the issue and present himself as a pragmatist focused on unemployment and the economy, piling up endorsements from some of the state's most powerful business groups and appealing to the moderates and independents who swing statewide elections in Virginia.

Azzhole Conk trying to claim that his thesis paper (from Pat Robertson's Regent "University") is old and, now, irrelevant. Fvck that. Sonja Sotomayor got skewered by Conks over some of here past sh*t, this guy should be drilled, too, then die in bed with a hooker - Robertson's daughter.

Yes - quite revelent'
Conk AZ GRZ - the media, especially the right-wing Main Stream Media, fixated for weeks on MICHELLE OBAMA's thesis.

This is far more pertenant to an election.

This guy is a lying sack of shit, who is trying to hide his extremist dominionist position, playing a moderate.

Jon, I agree with your concern about his opinions from 20 years ago but I think you position might be a little too strong and intolerant for a couple of reasons:

1) How do we know that he still holds these positions? I don't think you can't hold something that somebody wrote 20 years ago against them like they just wrote it yesterday (and this applies to Michelle Obama IMO as well). 20+ years ago I was a liberal who thought that government could do a lot of things to help people. Experience and time have turned me into more of a libertarian who believes in a limited government that focuses on key areas. If I ran for office should some whack job right winger be able to bring up my collegiate writings and use them to brand me as a liberal in a primary election? They would no longer represent what I believe. Now this guy might still be a social nazi but 20 year old writings don't prove that and more investigation is warranted based on those writings.

2) Can't people make mistakes? Some might say that he shouldn't have written that stuff in the first place and I would agree with them but people are human and they're going to do dumb things. The key question is: did they learn and grow from their mistakes? I've said it before but we need to stop looking for politicians who are squeaky clean and accept that their mistakes can actually help make them better leaders.

Time is as close as I can get to an Enquirer link. After 2 years in the military he apparently showed evidence of constructive and responsive citizenship.

Time Link

He hadn't been at Harvard long before he screwed up in a way that would come back to haunt him years later. In his freshman year, Kennedy was having trouble with a Spanish class. There was a test coming up, and he needed to do well in order to be eligible to play varsity football the next year. With the encouragement of some of his buddies, Kennedy recruited a friend who was good at Spanish to take the exam in his place. The scheme backfired. The surrogate was caught, and both boys were expelled, though Harvard offered them the opportunity to be readmitted later if they showed evidence of "constructive and responsive citizenship."

I have it on pretty good authority that one can get "booted" from Harvard and be re-admitted at a later date...
