I like how John Edwards made his multi-million dollar fortune by being a malpractice lawyer, yet it took him being unfaithful to his wife for people to realize that he is a douche.

neither of those things are what make him a douche... he's an all-around piece of shit... it's like the assembled portions of his life all paint a mosaic of douchatude... and yeah - he ain't got nothin' on John Phillips...

True!

But he had a significant political following prior to his infidelities becoming public. It just goes to show how a pretty face and speaking ability can make up for all kinds of obvious douchiness.

not quite - but there is a huge gulf of difference between the two... John Edwards... everything in his life is "how can i make this for me, about me, make me look better, etc... it's completely self-serving... and while you can accuse all politicians of that... it's not the case. Bubba has many flaws - and can be conniving and self-serving, but with clinton there are moments where you see that he wasn't just doing it for himself - he had a very real desire to make things better... i think you could say the same thing frankly of Bush, much as I dislike the guy... but Edwards falls in to that camp of candidates I've met that I truly despise - there is no deep-seeded conviction to help others - it just tested well and sounded right coming from a guy with his drawl to be a folksy populist... he's not the only one like that... but he may be among the all time leaders...

I got that same exact sense from Kerry.

during the 04 campaign??? yeah... thing is - there is a man of conviction in there... but he was absent in the 04 campaign... i know some of the people around that campaign - and all i can say is he followed a lot of bad advice about how to approach that campaign

Yeah, during the '04 campaign. It seemed like his position on things was determined by how it "tested" with the voters. :shake: :shake: :shake: ....which is probably why he came off as such a "waffler".

 imo there is no excuse for breaking your marriage vows... however - to say that they are all the same is completely bogus... with Edwards - it's part of a broader pattern (one that i've seen up close and personal on numerous occasions) that establish that they guy is a complete and utter douchebag with no redeeming qualities... with others - like Clinton, there were redeeming qualities to that person, that... while not excusing their infidelity, separate them from guys like Edwards

THK was a big believer in focus groups... (i am too for that matter) the problem for Kerry was that you could tell when he was "speaking from the script" rather than being himself... quite frankly, even when he believed the script - which was almost all the time... it appeared like "he's just saying that"... not a good thing - voters got that vibe from him - many voted not so much for him, but against Bush - and as we saw again in '08 that never works...
