UN ranks Canada as the 4th best country to live in - as opposed to the US of A clocking in at #13:

PARIS (AFP) – Norway takes the number one spot in the annual United Nations human development index released Monday but China has made the biggest strides in improving the well-being of its citizens.

The index compiled by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) ranks 182 countries based on such criteria as life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

The top ten countries listed on the index are: Norway, Australia, Iceland, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Japan.

The United States ranks 13th, down one spot from last year.

But yet, you open the doors to all countries and I would be willing to bet everyone still flocks to the 13th best country as opposed to the other "better" 12 countries.

We all like America its just made annoying with people who are myopic and xenophobic.

More proof of how capitalism and corporate greed have tarnished this nation. We could take a lesson from the 12 above us, especially the European nations.

Here's hoping that we will drop even further down the list.

That way, the backlog of non-immigrant and immigrant visa cases at our visa windows will go away. The lines outside the doors every morning, too.

Funny, I don't see those kinds of lines at the Candian Consulate.

I have been to a lot of places. Been shot at in some pretty nasty places, too. I've seen poverty and neglect in places one would never expect. I've seen an indifference to the human condition in some pretty progressive countries, too. Of all the places I have seen, I have never found a country that made me think, "Man, I'd like to move here." Europe, the Middle East, you name it.

I have always had a sense of relief when I stepped off an international flight in America. It reminds me of the line in Gladiator, when the main character tells Marcus Aurelius: "I have seen the rest of the world... it is dark and cruel. Rome is the light."
