President to Speak on Gay Rights

President Obama will tout the imminent passage of long-delayed hate crime legislation when he addresses the nation's largest gay rights group on Saturday, as he seeks to allay concerns among some in the community that he is moving too slowly to prove his commitment to their cause.
...
"The president has articulated unwavering support for it and a desire to sign it," said Melody Barnes, the president's top domestic policy adviser. "This is all part of a theme of steady, forward progress on issues that have been supported by the community."
But many activists say it will not be enough to ease their simmering frustration that Obama has not moved quickly on issues such as repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act or reversal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
Those concerns are unlikely to abate soon. Aides say Obama continues to support the goal of reversing both policies, but does not plan to make any major announcements about either in Saturday's speech. The delay has left some of his most ardent supporters frustrated.
"At a time when we're kind of broke and we're wondering where we're going to get the money, it'd make sense to focus some time on something that doesn't cost any money, like honoring the promise of our constitution to treat all of its citizens equally under the law," said Lane Hudson, a gay blogger and activist from the District.

Did he say anything profound? Or was it just more mush from the Teleprompter-in-Chief?

He certainly didn't touch on anything meaningful, such as ending don't ask don't tell. Seriously, how hard is it to just end that silliness? If he can't handle the heat that comes from that kind of decision, then how in the world is he ever going to handle a tough foreign policy issue, like Afghanistan or Iran?

So let me see if I've got this right...
you're comparing Gay Rights to decisions on Afghanistan - I'm sorry is Rush Limbaugh renting up that much space in your frontal lobe that that actually makes some kind of sense

wow are we a divided nation - if that's an example of where are heads are at...

OK, so forget everything else - why can't Obama rescind don't ask don't tell?

Swing and a miss, friend. You completely missed his point that there IS NO COMPARISON between the decisions, and yet the President can't even make the EASY ones because he's afraid of a little backlash. Hows he EVER going to make the HARD decisions, if that's the case?

because doing so would undermine the good order and discipline of the Armed Forces. we all know that the navy is gay....but the Army and Marines.....not so much

You also get these zealots roaming around when meetings/addresses like this occur. A photo a friend of mine snapped this morning driving around DC.
... do you think they have a bus rolling around protesting insurance companies who cover "domestic partnerships?" Me thinks not.

Cleets. It is easy enough for you to be patient. You could join the military and have your girlfriend openly kiss you.
You could get engaged and not have to worry about which state thousands of miles away you can get married in.
You don't have to worry about your marriage being recognized at any level.
Rights delayed are rights denied

Teresa Karr, my first date got married last month in Canada to the bull dyke she was dating.
On a personal not, who cares. I'd be willing to bet that if gays were able to marry, than everything related to the Wedding Industry would see a boom. We'd see more honeymoons, we'd have a country that is starting to show that it is true to it's orginial message of toleration (even though it's really bullshit.)
Then again, the government should have no part of marriage.
What's with you queers, stirring the pot?

I'm not positive about how things "work" in Washington, but I'm pretty sure that it's as simple as saying "DADT is over". There's not a lot of "hand wringing" that should be happening....ON HIS PART.

It's not as simple as that at all. Obama can't just say "DADT is over." It has to be done by Congress.

But, as C-in-C he could suspend enforcement of it, instead, it has gotten worse under his command - the fucking homophobe.
