BROWN, BRYANT, PROVIDENCE AND RHODE ISLAND AGREE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OSSC THROUGH 2013.
KINGSTON, R.I. – The men’s soccer head coaches at Brown, Bryant, Providence and Rhode Island have announced the formation of a four-year agreement to participate in the Ocean State Soccer Classic, beginning in the fall of 2010.
“Our program is very honored to be included in a tournament with three outstanding programs,” said Bryant coach Seamus Purcell who was recently inducted into the Providence Athletics Hall of Fame. “This tournament is a win-win for the state of Rhode Island and all soccer fans in the area.”
Modeled after Boston’s popular and long-running Beanpot Tournament - which features the city’s four traditional college hockey powers (Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern) - the Ocean State Soccer Classic will consist of two semifinal matches, to be held on campus sites, followed by a consolation/championship doubleheader at one of the four schools. The predetermined semifinal match-ups will rotate in a three-year cycle, allowing institutions to play each other at least once every two seasons.
An all-tournament team will highlight the event while a revolving trophy will be presented to each season’s champion.
The tournament is currently seeking a corporate sponsorship.
The inaugural OSSC opens on Thursday, Sept. 2 with URI playing at Providence, followed by Brown at Bryant on Friday, Sept. 3. The consolation and championship matches will be played at Brown on Monday, Sept. 6.
