North Carolina fires football coach Butch Davis

Post by dbackjon »

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)—North Carolina has fired football coach Butch Davis.

The school issued a statement Wednesday night announcing Davis’ dismissal nine days before the start of preseason practice.

Chancellor Holden Thorp says the decision was not prompted by any changes in the ongoing NCAA investigation into possible improper benefits and academic misconduct in the football program.

Rather, Thorp says he “lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution.”

The school scheduled a news conference Thursday morning to discuss the dismissal.

Yep, JMU is poised to take down ACC teams two years running. Kenan stadium is an amazing venue to catch a game.

One REALLY has to question the justification for this move NOW. What changed in the week or so since the ACC's media day, when everything seemed hunky-dory? The president just set his team up for massive failure. He should have pulled the trigger in January or not at all.

Idiot!

Sanctions scorecard in the last yr+:

USC: appeal of their sanctions got denied, so they’ll lose 30 scholarships and eligibility for a bowl game and the Pac-12 title game.

Ohio State: tattoogate, which led to the resignation of Jim Tressel and the departure of Terrelle Pryor. Forfeit all of their wins in 2010 and are now on a two year probation period.

Georgia Tech: slapped with a $100,000 fine and had their 2009 conference title revoked for failing to cooperate with an investigation

LSU: despite being found guily of major violations NCAA gave slap on wrist of 1 year probation. NCAA accepted LSU's self-imposed reduction of two scholarships during the 2010-11 academic year, as well as a 10 percent reduction in official visits and reductions in recruiting calls. LSU already had begun reducing official visits during 2010-11, but the NCAA expanded the punishment to include 2011-12.and a loss of 2 scholarships, await results of NCAA investigation.

Tenn: self-imposed a 2 year probation period and await results of NCAA. Being investigated for major violations:

Auburn: Still under investigation

Oregon under investigation.

What are the odds that UNC shows up to a game in Boone and the whole Tar Heel squad completely withers.

No duh. But can't you let a guy have a joke?

(Weirder things have happened, though. Oregon State played a '95 game in Stockton and LOST. Did you forget THAT? LOL.)

Not so much, TJ. At the time, Sagarin ranked the Big West Conference (which still sponsored football) BELOW the Big Sky, which was (and still is) I-AA.

OSU had one win that year (barely), over a Big Sky team

And lost to a team in a I-A league rated BELOW the Big Sky.

Officially, the Big West was I-A. But for all intents and purposes, they were I-AA. At least, that's what Sagarin said, and they're usually pretty good.
