Furman's Mens Golf Program ended

Todd Satterfield didn’t see it coming.

When Gary Clark, Furman’s athletic director, told his longtime men’s golf coach Feb. 6 that potential budget cuts could end the Paladins’ program, “I was dumbfounded,” Satterfield said.

With a Board of Trustees vote the next day, Furman’s men’s program was shuttered, effective after the spring season.

In a statement, interim president Carl Kohrt said, “. . . we have to constantly evaluate where to strategically allocate our resources.”

Furman’s men’s golf budget – including salaries, scholarships and travel – is about $375,000-$400,000, said Satterfield, in his 18th season. Consistent with most Division I schools, that funding would rank among the smallest of the 20 sports at Furman, a 2,700-student private, liberal-arts school in Greenville, S.C.
The womens golf team is still active.
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17

When you scrap a cheap sport like golf to add men's and women's lacrosse, those aren't "budget cuts".

Furman is the only Socon school with their own golf course. Very surprising that they canceled men's golf.

That's kinda what I thought too. Lot of discussion on the uffp. It does appear that Furman is running some deficits in their operating funds. The endowment is about 600B I believe but the earnings from that cover a small portion of the operating costs. Not sure exactly what's behind it. Scholarship costs is minimal. I am sure coaching cost and travel aren't. Not sure if the problem is left over from the previous president who lasted like 18 months.

Lacrosse seems to be their due to its appeal to Northeast students or at least that is what I am told. Not sure if it is true.

It also had just made it's way into the rankings for best college courses. :x

If there’s anything better than a weekend of college football – seeing old friends, tailgating, watching the alma mater play – it’s a college football weekend that includes great golf. South Carolina has a number of courses that are affiliated with college teams (Cobblestone Park with the University of South Carolina, the Walker Course with Clemson, etc.), but only one state golf course has made it onto Golfweek magazine’s “Best Campus Courses” for 2013.

The winner? Furman University Golf Club

It's pretty nice - I haven't played in a couple of years but I remember I hacked it up there as poorly as anywhere else I play. :ohno:

I used to play that course all the time back in the day. Pretty course.

It was $9 to walk for twilight. :thumb:

I am betting they don't cancel Women's golf since we have a national championship and I think three alums in the LPGA hall of fame, but who knows.

Apparently, there has been a change of plans.

I have heard some of our golf alums weren't too happy with being blind-sided by the news. :(
