Mount St. Joseph freshman forward Lauren Hill has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her incredible performance Sunday vs. Hiram College at Xavier. Hill dropped in four points on 2-of-3 shooting (she made the first and last buckets) in a 66-55 Mount St. Joseph victory moved up by the NCAA to allow the brain cancer-stricken player to play at least ONE game before chemo takes that away. The game was moved to Xavier to accommodate a much larger crowd than MSJ could hold at home, and even THEN, the 10K+ at Xavier's Cintas Center was a sellout. Over $70K was raised for The Cure Starts Now, a charity dedicated to the support of pediatric brain cancer research. Hill also received the HCAC Inspiration Award.
In the picture below, the right-handed Hill is shooting left handed because the combination of cancer and chemo has restricted her ability to shoot with her dominant hand. Hill has Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an incurable form of pediatric brain cancer.
Mount St. Joseph (1-0, 0-0 HCAC) returns to action 21 NOV vs. Buffalo State (OH) in Berea, OH.
