Looks like Michigan has gotten sick of destroying the MCLA and will be moving to varsity next season.

From insidelacrosse.com
The University of Michigan Athletics Department issued a press advisory to members of the lacrosse media Tuesday afternoon, announcing a press conference Wednesday during which athletic director Dave Brandon will be issuing a major announcement.

Last month, Inside Lacrosse first reported that department officials had approved the elevation of the men's club team for play in 2012. However, there were still details to be finalized in advance of a public announcement. It's widely believed tomorrow's announcement is official confirmation of earlier reports.
Here is the article from last month
Sources are telling Inside Lacrosse that the University of Michigan athletics department is preparing to announce the addition of men's and women's lacrosse programs, with the men's team to begin NCAA Division I play in time for the spring 2012 season, and the women's team in 2013.

Because of the advanced schedule on the men's side, officials within the department will begin preparing for next season as early as next week, though a formal announcement may be as much as a month away, sources say.

This confirmation brings to an end years of speculation that the MCLA powerhouse would join the DI ranks, as well as culminating a decade-long quest for coach John Paul. A key turning point was the arrival of new athletic director Dave Brandon, who took over on January 25, 2010, and has made several public comments about the prospect of DI lacrosse at Michigan, speaking to IL about it last December.

The shift in Michigan's departmental outlook created an opportunity that just four years ago, Paul was speaking about in the abstract. In a 2007 Inside Lacrosse magazine feature on the growth of lacrosse at the DI men's level Paul told Geoff Shannon: “We knew the realities were that this would be a remote possibility. But now with the way the sport has grown, and the way our program has evolved, there’s some momentum. Not that there is a formal proposal or a plan in place, but the athletic administration knows lacrosse and sees the potential.

In September 2010, however, Paul spoke more specifically about the hurdles his program faced in trying to make a jump to DI, saying, “At the major [FBS] football schools, it’s a completely different business model than everything else in college athletics. For a big school, it doesn’t make as much sense, from a business perspective, to add $2, 3 or 4 million to the budget to add a men’s and women’s program if they’re not going to get a return on that.”

This announcement comes after a major accelerated fundraising effort, which represented the final hurdle for the Wolverines, sources say.

In recent years, Michigan has emerged as a powerful force in the lacrosse world. Since 2008, the Wolverines are 70-1 with three straight MCLA championships, and are off to a 13-0 start this season. Four Wolverines were named MCLA All-Americans in ’09, and eight were named in ’10. Former Michigan face-off specialist Brekan Kohlitz was the first MCLA player drafted to the MLL in 2008. More recently, they've utilized their rising profile and proximity to Warrior (headquartered in nearby Warren, Mich.) to furnish the program with cutting-edge gear.

The team's final regular season contest is Saturday versus Toledo, and they'll be a heavy favorite entering the MCLA tournament.

The announcement comes after High Point's September 2010 and Marquette's December 2010 announcements that they'd be sponsoring NCAA DI men's lacrosse in 2013, the previously rumored start date for Michigan. With Presbyterian recently shuttering their men's lacrosse team, the Wolverines will be the 61st NCAA program next year, with the total bumping to 63 the following season.

Michigan is the first FBS school to add men's lacrosse since Notre Dame did it in 1981.

Questions still remain over how the coaching staff will take shape, though it's expected Paul will remain head coach and retain assistant Ken Broschart. As a public university, however, Michigan will have to publicly list the job.

As an updated to the enlarged portion of the article: Michigan lost a 6-7 stunner to Arizona St in the MCLA semi-finals. They finished the year 18-1. That means since 2008 they are 75-2 with 3 titles and 4 semi-final appearances.

I'm not quite sure what the conference affiliation will be for Michigan. Only Northwestern doesn't have lacrosse in the B10, but only PSU, OSU, and now Michigan are NCAA level, the rest are still MCLA level. If I had to bet it would be ECAC or CAA (doubtful, but how crazy would it be to see Michigan and UD on the same field with the uniforms).

How do Michigan's facilities compare to the rest of the NCAA teams? They were tops in the MCLA, but I'm sure there is a step up to the NCAAs.

Michigan currently plays in Oosterban Fieldhouse.

Oosterbaan Fieldhouse serves as Michigan Lacrosse’s Home playing field. It is located across the parking lot from Yost Ice Arena and behind Schembechler Hall on State Street. Aside from serving as the home of Michigan lacrosse, the building is used by U-M athletics for indoor practices, and is also used by the University’s intramural and club sports programs.

Constructed in 1970, Oosterbaan Fieldhouse features two endline filming stations, a climate-controlled playing/spectating environment and sideline seating for 800 people. The building is joined to Schembechler Hall which houses the Michigan football team. Featuring a state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface, the enclosed practice and playing area provides year-round, full-field training and development opportunities.

Newly constructed and connected to Oosterbaan Fieldhouse, the Al Glick Field House is the new indoor practice facility for football. The new building has much more space for fans, including seating for 2,000, restrooms, and concession space. Although the current design limits the participation of “hard-ball” sports (lacrosse, baseball, softball), discussions are under way to accomodate these sports, eventually giving Michigan Lacrosse two full-field, indoor facilities.

On the horizon, plans are under way for Elbel Field to be converted to FieldTurf within the next few years. Stadium lighting and a permanent scoreboard will be added, along with seating for 3,000. This will finally give Michigan an outdoor lacrosse facility.

Most exciting, the team is finalizing plans to construct a new lacrosse-only service building next to Elbel Field that will include locker rooms, offices, meeting rooms, equipment, training and a 5,000 square-foot weight room. Once the new building is completed Michigan lacrosse will have the best facilities in the nation, at any level.

This is how Elbel Field currently looks - yeah it needs some help. It's just north of the Big House, Chrysler Arena, and the baseball/softball complex.

I'd imagine they move the field from the edge, tear down whatever building is on the corner, and center it in the lot for the most part.

NCAA D-I lacrosse venues vary widely. Some, like Delaware, play in the football stadium while others play on whatever field is available on campus. I don't think anyone has a dedicated palace for lacrosse. I mean, if anyone was going to have a lacrosse mecca, it would be Hopkins, and their field is nothing special.

Michigan is smart to go indoors. Those February games would be a bitch. It's bad enough around these parts:

They are looking to go outdoors with a LAX only facility....I'd bet if the weather is complete shit they'd head indoors to one of their complexes.

How crazy would it be to have 3 LAX facilities on campus like Michigan is apparently going too?

The ACC four will only have lost to ACC teams in the tourney. MD > UNC and Duke, MD and UVA in the finals. ACC lax = CAA football? ;)

Boy did Merlin look good yesterday. That is one tough, harassing defense. I think the Terps take it tomorrow with the support of a stadium full of Merliners. Should be a great atmosphere and maybe record attendance?

Doesn't Albany have a sweet lacrosse only field?

UMBC and Loyola have nice lacrosse stadiums, but I think they play soccer there too.

Good hard hitting defensive game yesterday. It was miserable out yesterday, attendance was @35,500. I have to think if it were nicer more poepl would have come out to see Maryland in the finals.

I know it was hot, but that attendance was kind of weak - local team in the finals, playing a conference rival from not too far away, supposedly in the mecca-area of lacrosse. That attendance was 10k to 15k less than some of the previous years at other venues (not sure what previous attendance has been in Baltimore) - again, it was certainly hot, but hot sunny days don't normally kill sports attendance.

I was hoping to go with my wife and son, but 95 degrees and humid as a swamp is no place for an 11 month old. So I sat on my couch in my air-conditioned house, out of the sun with some cold beers.

Nah. You can always put more layers on, but once yer naked, yer naked, and probably going to jail.

Besides, as an avid skier, the longer we have snow, the better. :coffee:
