Re: Volleyball
UNI's volleyball team outscores the #12 team in the nation, Iowa State, 94-91, but lost the match (23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25).
Still an exciting match in front of a UNI-record home crowd.

Florida beats Stanford 3-2 and UOP destroys San Jose State in the Community Bankers Classic in Stockton. Tonight, Stanford takes on SJSU at 5 and Florida faces hometown UOP. The results of this tournament could foreshadow the rest of the season. If UOP beats Florida, look for UOP to get their first national championship since the back-to-back title seasons in '85-'86.

Re: Volleyball
So did UOP beat Florida, Super? PSU has started the season a little slow, losing to UW (#3) 3-0 and UO (#12) 3-1. On the road this weekend in Nevada to play Sam Houston, Nevada and UC Davis - against them we should do better. How's Sac State this year?

Re: Volleyball
Unfortunately, UOP did NOT beat Florida. Only time will tell how the season goes.
The year has started in a rough fashion for the Hornets. After opening 2-1 at the Syracuse Invitational with wins vs. Siena and UNH and a loss to the Orange, Sac was swept in their own Sac State Invitational, all 5-game jobs, vs. Bako, Riverside, and Santa Clara. The Santa Clara loss was expected; for a Hornet team to lose to a recent D-II call-up and a Big West school that's been horrible until recently does not bode well. In the next week, the Hornets have a shot at redemption with the Hornet Invitational (TWO pre-season home invites?!?) vs. San Fran, Fresneck, and Bama. Look for a 1-2 record there. Then comes Causeway (home), a trip to the DePaul Invitational (W. KY, E. MI, and DePaul) and home vs. Reno before opening the conference season. Based on what's gone on, I'm expecting Sac to enter conference 6-8 with, hopefully, a shot at improving enough to get back to their main role as the powerhouse of the Big Sky. The reaction to this time of early season difficulties will tell whether or not that happens. Perhaps it's time for Debby Colberg to come back....

Bryant is off to a slower start than last year and is 1-6 on the season so far. They were 16-19 last year with a full DI schedule.

Re: Volleyball
Portland State moves into Big Sky play next week with a 5-5 record, losing (but close) to nationally ranked teams, winning over lesser schools (Boise St., Nevada, Davis etc. - no push-overs). We have a taller team this year, four of them over 6' and one 5'10" who plays over six feet. Emerging leaders in kills are Phillips (the 5'10"), Hamilton (6'3") and Zielke (6'3"). Fradella and Vojnovic (both 5'9") are great outside hitters and servers; Villalpando at a tiny 5'3" is good too. Montana and MSU are up next weekend; we should roll over both. Coaches picked us to win the conference. No one wants to be the front-runner; everyone keys on you. But I'd say we're quite good at least, and bound to get better. Sac State ruled the conference for more than a few years, but they're rebuilding this year. It's our turn!

The Bison rolled over Oral Roberts 3-0 this weekend to open Summit League play. Bison are now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The real story however, was the attendance at the game... a CAPACITY crowd packed the Bentson-Bunker Fieldhouse for the game... THAT is a good sign for Bison athletics.

Re: Volleyball
Capacity crowd? That's fantastic for volleyball, Twintown. We're drawing a measly 400-500. 'Course, we don't have dorms - commuter school. We'll pick up later in the season, but will be lucky to sell out 3-4 matches.

I lived across the street from it for two years - and went to most home games...
never understood why volleyball hasn't broken out as a big deal sport - beautiful athletic women in tight shorts - and the rhythm of the game invites amusing chants and cheering too...

Built in 1925 for a mere $180,000, the West Gym was an intimidating place for opposing teams to play. With an intimate seating capacity of 2,052, the West Gym not only filled up quickly - it got very, very loud. UNI's volleyball team posted two of the longest winning streaks in NCAA history there, a 50 match streak in the mid '90s, and a 74 match streak from 1997-2004 that is the second longest ever in the nation.
I loved the atmosphere in the West Gym. Seems like volleyball rarely draws over 2000 anyway, so sometimes I think it would be nice for VB to move back there. However, I doubt that will ever happen.
Re: Volleyball
I agree. It would be/is a massive home court advantage. However, there would be a ton of people pulling a "that's sexism putting the women in there", but oh well.JayJ79 wrote:clenz wrote: What does West Gym hold?Built in 1925 for a mere $180,000, the West Gym was an intimidating place for opposing teams to play. Re: Volleyball
PSU took out Montana and Montana State handily this weekend, 3-0 3-0. Big Sky play has started, and although it's early yet, the conference is going as expected with EWU and Northern Colorado winning as well. Looks like last year, with PSU and EWU facing off and Northern Colorado the wild card. PSU lost only one senior to graduation; they look pretty smooth. Phillips, the transfer in from New Mexico, has made a huge impact - played in all the games thus far and leads the Big Sky in kills at .375%. How does Sac State look so far?

The reason up Appers don't post in this thread is because our VB team suck. Three years ago, we were 2nd in the SoCon behind CofC, but it's been downhill from there with new coaches. The current coach can't recruit a single girl over 6 feet tall.
Ric Flair's daughter use to play VB at App. He use to come to the games and was very vocal in his cheering.

Liberty has a pretty good volleyball team, beat Coastal 3-1 yesterday as they look to win their 3rd straight Big South title. Prior to LU, Winthrop ruled our conference for a while.

Update on Big Sky Volleyball - a three way tie at first place, EWU, UNC, and PSU. It's as tight as everyone expected. However - PSU has now beat EWU (and Sac State, SuperHornet) at Cheney, and tonight they take on UNC at UNC. Arguably, the toughest match we face. Go Viks!
